| 3.7 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 7/10 | 4/5 | 7/10 | 4/5 | 15/20 | Sep 2, 2007 Bottle: Deep brown, cola accents, large foamy beige head, clingy lacing. Bready aroma, slight white/black Necco wafer tinge, minor cocoa powder. Has a candy sweetness that fills the nose, the powdery kind. Quite malty on the tongue, dark, moderate hop presense but without too much bitterness. Somewhat of an odd duck as it is. Big in malts, remains bready through to the finish. Seems like a really hefty American Amber crossed with some sort of Belgian. Picks up a little bit of citrus rind as it warms. I reiterate, this one is somewhat of an odd duck. I am getting some heavy breadiness, dark malts, slight citrus peel, and a touch of anise. Makes for a weird combination. Moderate to full body, moderate mouthfeel. Certainly an interesting beer, but one that just seems a bit confused. Lingering cocoa powder, Necco wafers, and subtle citrus peel. Well crafted, just a bit weird.

It’s slightly sweet yet bitter with notes of butterscotch and spice as well as alcohol. Meidum to full bodied and warm going down. Boutip (2371), Gatineau, Quebec, Canada
| 4.1 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 8/10 | 5/5 | 8/10 | 4/5 | 16/20 | May 13, 2008 Bottle courtesy of Kryptic: Poured a deep hazy brown color ale with a big foamy head with some good retention and some nice lacing. Aroma of light roasted malt mix with some big caramel notes and some floral and medium bitter hops. Taste is a mix between roasted malt with some caramel malt with a dominant hops profile which includes some bitter and floral notes. Full body with what looks like minimal filtration with some good carbonation and no apparent alcohol. I quite enjoyed that one and thought it was an interesting experiment which falls beside regular style and must admit that most Avery anniversary beers are really good. eaglefan538 (2369), Wilmington, Delaware, USA

Poured a filtered brown color with some mahoganey hues, tan head. Floral, spicey aroma. Flavor was caramel, chocolate, spices, zingy coriander and light ginger, fruits, rose petals and lavendar. The flavors all worked together quite well in this one, a delight coming from a brewer I don’t trust worth a darn. Took this as a belgian style dark ale. Thanks, Robert! badlizard (2353), Berkeley, California, USA

| 3.6 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 7/10 | 4/5 | 7/10 | 3/5 | 15/20 | Sep 30, 2007 Dark reddish chestnut-brown body. Large, foamy, light tan head with good retention. Sticky sheets of lacing coat the glass. Aroma shows strong, sweet burnt sugar and molasses malts. Hints of dark fruits appear on a deep inhale. The flavor is very malty and primarily sweet, Dark, burnt white sugar and scorched molasses comprise the bulk of the flavor. Mild spices accompany figs and raisons as complimentary flavors. Moderate citrus and floral hops add a slightly bitter balance. Medium body with a smooth consistency. Sweet fruity finish. Nice, quality brew. A little too sweet for me. | 3.4 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 6/10 | 4/5 | 7/10 | 4/5 | 13/20 | Jun 22, 2007 22oz bottle very fresh. what’s this Avery bottle conditions now? nice. pours dense and dark with tan fluffy head. flavor has yeasty-meaty smell, subtle chocolate, toasted biscuit, and fruity hops in there too. flavor is pretty hoppy with fruity and piney hop notes, subtle hints of chocolate, licorice, toasted biscuit and nuts, mildly spicy yeasty taste. alc. very well hidden but sorta warms. mouthfeel is cearmy. well the flavor isn’t great but the palate is really long with nice subtle milk chocolate, so i gave it a 7 instead of 6 in flavor. in the end, sorta a mess of a beer that comes off confused sort of a big beer for the sake of a big beer. style? i’d say and American-Belgian Strong Ale because it seems like belgian yeast strain too me.
