| 3.5 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 7/10 | 3/5 | 6/10 | 4/5 | 15/20 | Aug 15, 2007 This dark brown ale poured with a modest beige head, eliciting an aroma of salt, celery and wood. The flavor is hoppy and malty, but more bitter than sweet, or is it more sweet than bitter? - hard to tell. There is a carbonated mouthfeel, an alcohol bite and a rather harsh peppery finish. mgumby10 (1858), Jupiter, Florida, USA
| 4.1 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 8/10 | 4/5 | 8/10 | 4/5 | 17/20 | Jun 12, 2007 Pours a dark brown, with some reddish maroon hues. Has a huge, thick, foamy well retained light tan head. Very nice looking. Smells lovely, a lot of cinnamon and nutmeg, spices, candy suagr, and molasses. The taste is much of the same but with a little tartness and hops. A little bit bitter finish, with good doses of cinnamon and nutmeg. Really flavorful on the palate, alot going on in this beer. Aftertaste has some vinous characters and finishes bitter and hoppy. Interesting and very good. LinusStick (1846), Moon Twp, suburb of Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, USA
| 3.6 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 5/10 | 4/5 | 7/10 | 3/5 | 17/20 | Aug 19, 2007 Nice American strong. A little too sweet for my tastes, but not bad. Seems this style is over hoppy and hot, or extremely sweet and this falls under the latter. Aroma of roasted malt and caramel. Pour was near perfect. An inviting dark brown with a beautiful 3 finger light tan head. Taste was sweet-molasses and roastiness in the front...sugary and malt notes. NIce semi dry finish with just a tad of hops that peek out. Nice complex brew...a little less sweet and could’ve been close to a 4 with me. Hides the alcohol well. nearbeer (1842), Knoxville, Tennessee, USA
| 4.1 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 8/10 | 4/5 | 8/10 | 4/5 | 17/20 | Sep 9, 2007 Bomber. Barely can see through this deep brown beer with red highlights. Huge creamy and sticky head lasts forever. Aroma is big molasses malt and fruity hops. Flavor is similar with earthy-herb, fruity (Fuggles, maybe?) hops taming some spicy dark fruit and slight cocoa very well. Just a touch of alcohol rounds it all out nicely. The finish is bitter but not harsh; seems a bit Goldings or Saaz-like. Even some slight bubblegum in the aftertaste, like a Belgian. Palate feels smooth, oily and medium-large bodied, but not syrupy. Excellent experiment in what seems to be an American style barleywine with a flavor battle of the hops: American vs. European. thegreenrooster (1841), St.louis, Missouri, USA
| 3.7 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 7/10 | 3/5 | 8/10 | 4/5 | 15/20 | Jul 31, 2007 Pour is a very dark brown with a average white head. Aroma is all things pine hops with some dark roasted malts. Flavor is molasses with some pine hops, dark fruit and a dollop of alcohol. Oh the alcohol is in this one in a big way. The more it warms the more i can even smell it. Still this does have enough tasty things going on.
