Aroma - Figs, dates, raisins, burnt caramel <P> Appearance - Deep clear ruby/mahogany, durable creamy beige head and thick sheeting lace that really adheres to the glass.
Flavor - Rich amlt sweetness with some roasted, earthy flavors. Spicy bitterness comes on strong, bringing a long, dry finish.
Palate - Full body, fairly soft carbonation, rich full mouthfeel.
Overall - Quite satisfying in all regards, actually one of Avery’s better efforts. Gregis (1132), Shawnee, Kansas, USA
| 3.8 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 8/10 | 4/5 | 8/10 | 4/5 | 14/20 | Aug 30, 2007 Pours a dark brown, that shows as a clear garnet when held to the light, topped with a dense, pitted, frothy beige head. The aroma is a rich, deep malty blend of dark fruits, pineapple, white pepper and both floral and faint piney hops. Full-bodied and creamy-smooth with a nice bitter hop finish. Sweet yet almost smoky malts up front with an immediate hit of hop bitterness following, some citrus some spruce-like, with notes of dark fruits and a dry, lightly bitter and peppery finish. There’s a lot going on with this one and while I’m not sure that it’s entirely well integrated, it’s definitely interesting and worth a try should you get your hands on a bottle. I’d bet that this one would mellow and blend much better with a little more age on it. piscator34 (1129), Winnipeg, Manitoba, Canada
| 3.4 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 6/10 | 3/5 | 7/10 | 3/5 | 15/20 | Nov 12, 2007 Bottled sample via oakbluff. Nearly opaque dark brown with moderate carbonation. Aromas of citric hops, bready munich malts, and a bit of a vegital note. Flavors are of hot bean sprouts, toasted and caramel malts, and cinnamon? Full bodied, with a slightly dry finish. Sort of an unusual brew, but still fairly good. BlackDonald (1127), Boise, Idaho, USA
| 3.3 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 7/10 | 4/5 | 6/10 | 3/5 | 13/20 | Apr 18, 2008 Not the greatest anniversary to ever grace the Avery label. This is a big, warming beer, but a little to hoppy upfront with a strong fruit component that I was just not crazy about. Just not balanced enough, kind of a trainwreck on the palate in my opinion. | 4 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 9/10 | 4/5 | 9/10 | 3/5 | 15/20 | Dec 31, 2007 Pours a dark brown with no haze. Huge, creamy, frothy off-white head that disappears slowly and leaves a sticky lace all over the glass. Smells of sweet sugars and malts right up front, but you also get the tell tale citrusy smell of hops. Tastes big and sweet, a little chocolatey up front with a little coffee as well. Hoppy on the finish, sweet citrusy, orange. A bit thick, with pretty good carbonation. This beer is very, very tasty and interesting. robforbes (1099), Bremerton, Washington, USA
