There was quite a bit of a tan head on it, which left lots of lacing. Nice aroma. Lots of dark fruits, caramel and toffee to the nose. Big, rich malty taste. Actually some coffee notes on top. Balanced well with lots of hops to have a slight dryness at the end. Surprisingly no sweetness to the taste. Very Nice. Darkover (1315), Columbus, Ohio, USA

Rich complex malts - malt, caramel, nutty, molasses flavor - with decent bitterness backing. LIngering grapefruit hops, plum and caramel/molasses. Fuller bodied. Alcohol present, but in background. | 4 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 8/10 | 4/5 | 8/10 | 4/5 | 16/20 | Aug 22, 2007 Pours a nearly opaque with dark mahogany hues and a thin, airy dark tan head. Aroma of sweet dark caramel with a hint of dark chocolate and big grapefruity hoppy notes with some doughy Belgian yeast. Body starts with a nice dark caramel malty sweetness and some plum and raisin complexity along with good bready yeasty balance and plenty of fresh citrusy hops throughout. FInishes with a crisp hint of lingering roasty bittersweet dark chocolate. A very unique and enjoyable Belgian/American strong ale. It’s kinda like a double IPA with some chocolate malt and Belgian yeast. I just wish this would be bottle conditioned. ElGaucho (1730), Minneapolis, Minnesota, USA

When I was at the store, I wasn’t sure if I had rated this one yet; the label is similar to the one for Thirteen and I had kind of lost track of what number anniversary they were on. Fresh, fruity hop aroma; very nice. Opaque body with a very large tan head. Weaves a tapestry of lace. My palate really had to adjust to this brew. The first sip made me wince, but it settles into a pretty good brew. There’s a malt and hop combination that aren’t perfectly compatible. However, it is unique, and when you’ve rated 1,600 beers, finding something unique can be a challenge. I really do like this beer; it challenges the status quo. The label speaks to "a very distinct yeast strain". Perhaps that is what makes this brew so different. Kudos to Adam Avery for his contributions to the craft beer movement. sloth (1678), Ceciltucky, Co., Maryland, USA
| 4 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 7/10 | 5/5 | 8/10 | 4/5 | 16/20 | Sep 12, 2007 Small tan head with excellent retention, lacing is sweet, hanging around, very attractive. Clear brown color with ruby red edging. A real looker. Nose is lightly sweet malts, funkily fruity and grainy. Med/full body, chewy and creamy with a slick carbonation. Medium sweet malts, faint chocolte notes, juicey fruit gum, caramel maltiness is great and enjoyable. Sweet? Nahhhhh, just right. Spicey, lightly swet finish. Groovy little brew. Dark, sweet aroma, with notes of grass, hay, real nice. Flavor is heavy sweet too. Lots of dark fruit. Texture is oily, full body. Dorwart (1828), Robbinsville, New Jersey, USA
| 4 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 8/10 | 4/5 | 8/10 | 4/5 | 16/20 | Oct 22, 2007 Nice 1 inch thick head of fine and dense bubbles. Mocha colored. Light carbonation. Big aroma. Can smell it across the table. Ripe fruit, floral hops, bit of roastyness, bit of smoke hidden in the background and some molasses. Color is a very dark port brown. This brew is starting off pretty damn good and looks great sitting in my Grottenbier chalice. Big maltyness in the flavor with some sweet malts, roasted grains, dry bitter resinous hops and a late smokyness. Some herbal notes and spices mixed in there also. Noticable alcohol presence with a nice warming as it goes down. Finishes dry and roasty with a little lingering burnt toast and bitterness. This brew really is not all that sweet in my opinion which is great for this style. A damn solid ASA and one of the better brews from Avery in recent time.
