Nose of hops and chocolate. This thing look delicious just pouring....tastes of hops and choc but subdued by the body of malts and spices. A bit of alcohol on the taste but just a perfect amount. Smooth mouth and swallow with a wonderful, almost gooey thickness on the way down. This is a wonderful beer. It reminds me of the Collaboration. Will it cellar???? | 4.4 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 9/10 | 4/5 | 8/10 | 4/5 | 19/20 | Sep 16, 2007 Aroma is very hoppy, with scents of fresh hops coming right of the bottle upon opening. Color is a deep ruby amber with good carbonation and a thick, tight, tan head. Taste is bold, piney and roasted. Starting with a full body it goes down with a some what sharp feel that leads you to think it is going to be rich. Finish burst out of this with a citrus hop flavor that has a bold pine flavor coming out. All of this turns to a full bitterness then somehow morphs into a roasted malt flavor that leaves you with an almost coffee like taste. I feel this may be the most complexly flavored beer they have done. It seems to change flavors as you drink it and is bold and rich yet easy to drink. The more I drink the more I like it. This is just an amazing beer. Jvittorio4187 (255), Boardman, Ohio, USA
| 4.4 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 9/10 | 4/5 | 9/10 | 5/5 | 17/20 | May 27, 2007 Excellent. Pours a very dark reddish amber. The head is so smooth and tight that you need to let this one sit to get the full aroma. Once the aroma comes through it is very deep. Hints of molasses, plenty of fruit, carmel, slight chocolate, slight smoke, and I want to say roasted nuts? Massive and complex flavor. Smoke, light fruit, carmel, sugar, and molasses. Finish is nice and dry. No doubt this was dry hopped by the lingering bitter finish. Sticky on the lips. Once of the best i’ve had from avery. gunhaver (1025), Tampa, Florida, USA
| 4.4 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 9/10 | 4/5 | 9/10 | 4/5 | 18/20 | Mar 28, 2008 Bottle. Pours a deep reddish brown, with a big, tan fluffy head. Prominent bands of lacing on the glass. Big plum aroma. Caramel, licorice, molasses. Fairly hoppy. Some nice chocolate. Pretty cool. Dried fruit flavors, with a rich brown sugar taste. Licorice, molasses, fig, nutmeg, and a nice spicy mouthfeel. Simply delicious. Bitter finish, and well-balanced. Surprisingly easy drinking. A very unique beer, and was definitely surprised by this one. Defreni (1007), Frederiksberg, Denmark
| 4.4 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 9/10 | 4/5 | 9/10 | 4/5 | 18/20 | Mar 2, 2008 Flaske. Fantastisk flot sort øl. Kraftig duft af humle, men på den helt rigtige mouthwatering måde. Smagen er ikke så bitter som de foregående DIPA men er så meget mere balanceret. Ønskede bare at drikke mere. | 4.4 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 8/10 | 4/5 | 9/10 | 4/5 | 19/20 | Jul 13, 2007 Updated: Aug 25, 2007I drank the Fourteen from the tap at the Avery tasting room and, later, from the bottle. It was equally good from both, a real treat. I had a tough time distinguishing all of the flavors; I’ve read licorice, plum, citrus, molasses, chocolate... I wouldn’t really disagree with any of those descriptions. Anyways, this is just a really inventive and tasty beer. RERATE: I tasted the Fourteen again at a tasting/kickback. This beer was the smash hit and still deserves my 4.4 rating. craftbeerdesign (754), Alpharetta, Georgia, USA
| 4.3 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 8/10 | 4/5 | 9/10 | 4/5 | 18/20 | Jun 30, 2008 bomber. pours a dark brown with a nice thick tan fluffy head.... which stays throughout as a thin tan head. aromas of molasses, candi sugar and dark fruits. huge malt character on the palate, with flavors of currants, molasses and sweet sugar. very soft and carbonated on the top, while very bitter on the back and sides. the dry hopping comes through on the finish quite well. this one sticks with you, but in a very different way than the usual hopped up IIPA. very flavorful and unique. quite excellent - I’ll buy another one before they are gone for good. joekfsu (138), Boardman, Ohio, USA
| 4.3 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 9/10 | 5/5 | 9/10 | 4/5 | 16/20 | Mar 9, 2008 22 oz bottle. Pours a very dark ruby with 2 to 3 cm foamy brown rolling head, looks almost stout like on head profile. Aroma is balanced between sweet malt, molasses and hops. Initial flavor is also balanced in a similar fashion. The end flavor and aftertaste are dominated by hops and alcohol and is lasting. Good lacing, light carbonation, medium to full body, and alcohol noted. Drinkability is high, really enjoyed this one.
