Distinct aroma with smoke, tobacco and caramel. Upfront, this ale is big on US hops, resinous, piney, bold. The flavors move into uncertain terrain with an unharmonious combination of tart, acrid, caramel, fruity and bitter notes. Long hoppy, bitter and tangy finish. Really a pretty interesting ale that could be refined by the brewer and I would like to revisit. csbosox (1085), Prairie Village, Kansas, USA
| 3.7 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 7/10 | 3/5 | 7/10 | 4/5 | 16/20 | Jul 9, 2008 Bottle is over a year old since I just bought an Avery 15 yesterday. Served a few minutes out of the small beer fridge in a shaker glass. Aroma is rich chocolate, floral hops, a bit of roastiness, some lactose, and some dark fruits (figs/prunes). Smells pretty good to me. Dark reddish brown color with a one fingered cappuccino head. The initial taste is malty with some roastiness, some chocolate, some earthy and floral hops, and a somewhat bitter finish with a nice, lingering hops flavor. I also get the taste of molasses cookies in the flavor. The body is large, but the bitterness and roast balance the malt. Very drinkable, way too much for a beer of this size. drfabulous (1275), Columbia, Missouri, USA
| 3.7 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 7/10 | 4/5 | 7/10 | 4/5 | 15/20 | Mar 23, 2008 Sweet. Malty. Pours a thick head. The taste is hard to pin down. American Strong? Maybe. But nothing like other strong ales out there. Caramel and a bit of chocolate for sure. Nice dark taste. My sister hooked me p with this one. Much thanks. Papsoe (15109), Frederiksberg, Denmark
| 3.7 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 7/10 | 4/5 | 8/10 | 3/5 | 15/20 | Aug 16, 2007 (Bottle 65 cl) Courtesy of boboski. Pours a beautiful, warm chestnut brown with a tint of red and a dense, beige head leaving some laces. The aroma is rich with sweetish, burned caramel. Quite a full body with about a ton of roasted malt and and again these accents of sweetish, burned caramel. Solid if not exactly overwhelming bitterness. 150807 JMFG (1514), Florida, USA
| 3.7 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 7/10 | 4/5 | 8/10 | 3/5 | 15/20 | Jun 17, 2007 Neat color - initially looks like a dark brown, but further review reveals a deep, dark red color. Light tan head. Musky anise and allspice aroma, with a bit of earthy hoppiness. Spiciness up front in the taste, with anise, cocoa, roast, and alcohol flavors all present. Moderate heat in the finish. A real nice brew, could use some softer edges, but still good. yobdoog (1523), Woodridge NY, New York, USA

Some spice and citrus hops on the aroma with a lot of sugary sweetness. Taste is smooth and sweet with some molassess and grain with some earthy hops. Nice and aging well. | 3.6 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 8/10 | 4/5 | 7/10 | 3/5 | 14/20 | Jun 19, 2007 22oz. bottle. Intriguing aroma, featuring an array of malt and hop characteristics, including darkly toasted toffeeish sweetness, dried fruits, spruce, floral perfume, pineapple and earthiness along with a lighter degree of doughy yeast, peppery alcohol and faint smoke. Deep, clear mahogany color with a lasting, fine, creamy tan head. Flavor profile is also fairly well balanced, with sweet, roasty, caramelized malts and a hint of cocoa combined with a brief hop bite up front followed by a lingering bitterness and citric, spicy character, and seeing a bittersweet, long, mildly alcoholic, semi-dry finish. Palate is fairly active and gently astringent, slightly sticky and combined with a full body. Certainly unique and flavorful, although I found it a bit harsh in places. Regardless, Happy 14th! jayme9874 (756), Hamburg, New York, USA
| 3.6 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 6/10 | 5/5 | 7/10 | 4/5 | 14/20 | May 13, 2007 Updated: Jul 22, 2007Very dark brown with ruby hues, creamy tan head, estery, fruity nose, has some off elements in nose as well (burnt plastic?) ,alcohol and hops. Medium bodied, creamy, sweet chocolate malt, almost roasty, belgium influenced flavors, controlled bitterness, warming but that "something" in the nose is in the flavor as well and its funky, not awful for that it wavers in and out. Its distracting and a shame because this is tasty. Will need to rerate and see if it is still present.
