rocbyter (625), Waterbury, Connecticut, USA Aug 19, 2008 Strong malt aroma with a moderate amount of hops. Super dark amber or brown with a medium dark tan head. Strong sweet malt beginning with a strong malt and bitter finish. Creamy palate. redlight (1048), Winter Park, Florida, USA Aug 19, 2008 I’ve had this young and now rating it after its aged some. Chocolatey malty aroma, i remember the fresher bottle having a lot more hops in the nose. Pours very dark brown with a dense tan head that lasts with thick lacing. Strong malt flavors with strong chocolate and cola like flavors with a somewhat hoppy finish. The younger bottle definitely had stronger hop flavors, but this is really good too. It’s very smooth. joshwilfong (516), Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, USA Aug 17, 2008 dark brown with large tan head. flavor initially of some possible chocolate malt and fig sweetness, a lot of hop bitterness and some yeasty funk. a lot of flavors and they dont necessarily mesh perfectly, but flavorful and solid overall robforbes (709), Bremerton, Washington, USA Aug 16, 2008 bottled in 2007.
pours dark with a red tint when held up to the light, medium size tan head that dissipates slowly leaving a very nice lacing.
smell is of prunes, figs, cocoa, some caramel, some malts, slight hint of roasted nuts.
taste is thick and creamy, dark and bitter chocolate, dark fruits, some caramel, some sweet malts, a little white pepper in the back.
SpudClampDawg (919), Jasper, Indiana, USA Aug 15, 2008 22oz bottle: Deep, dark brown pour with a thick and lasting mocha colored head. The nose offers a fantastic balance of citrusy hops, caramelized malts and sublte oxidation. Thick, chewy body offers an array of aged malt. Notes of burnt caramel, cookie dough, fresh dough, brownie batter and honey. A splash of orange and grapefruit hops balance the sugary malts. The bitterness is subdued, but the balance is there and this drinks really well. Oxidation is starting to become apparent, but it adds to the overall complexity.
