| 3.8 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 8/10 | 4/5 | 7/10 | 4/5 | 15/20 | Jul 17, 2007 Bottle: Pours an amber/orange with a huge off-white foamy head. Tons of aroma of candylike malts and lots of hopy juicy aroma. Flavor is malty and a little carmelly but very bitter and hoppy. More imperial ipa like then anything. Hops are a little dank and spicy and florally. The body is medium and not syrupy like most barleywines. Very drinkable. WolfsBlood84 (103), Indianapolis, Indiana, USA

Smells sweet, malty, and hoppy. Tastes malty, caramel and slightly sweet at first then a little bitter hoppy aftertaste. Tastes clean and smooth for being 9.2% APV. Thought it was pretty good and @ $6 for this bottle - damn cheap. This is the second Avery’s I’ve tried and certainly not the last. yayforbeer (648), Orange Park, Florida, USA

Dark brown pour with a nice beige head. Aroma is malty and hoppy. Flavor is excellent with loads of caramel malts and a medium sweetness, and then the hops take over. Plenty of hops here. Alcohol bite is pretty well hidden. I offered a taste to my wife and she just gave me that “you must be nuts” look and passed, then hit me up for a White Russian cocktail. An excellent barleywine. I like it. zootfinster (179), Chicago, Illinois, USA

This is at least a year old, which I might not have allowed to happen if I’d simply taken the time to read the "hop head’s delight" business in the commercial description. Oh, well. Cest la guerre. Pours murky ebony brown with toffee/garnet highlights. Thick sudsy tan head with bits of slippery lace running down the sides. Sweaty, footy, husky, caramel/toffee/raisin nose. Deceptively light body, soft carb, and well-modulated flavors comprise a pleasant attack. All the same notes from the nose back for the mid-palate. It really is easy drinking, they’re not kidding. Not much finish. I get the feeling I should have hit this one fresh, but it’s still pretty damn good. ilovedarkbeer (1369), Dallas, Texas, USA
| 3.9 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 7/10 | 4/5 | 8/10 | 4/5 | 16/20 | Jul 8, 2007 Was dissapointed with this one. Pours a reddish amber color typical of a dark IPA or DIPA. Tastes of hops, malt, barley and a bit of caramel. Weaker flavor than i am used to. Will not buy again. BigDaddyBlues (39), Columbus, Ohio, USA
| 4.5 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 8/10 | 5/5 | 9/10 | 5/5 | 18/20 | Jul 8, 2007 Bomber purchased at From the Vine. This is one of the best beers I have tasted so far. I am a hophead. I did not really enjoy the hoppy stouts I tried so I was dubious about a hoppy barley wine. Was I ever wrong. I kept looking at the glass hoping it would spontaneously refill. The aroma was hoppy but sweet. The first sip was the same, hoppy but sweet. The winey state that gives the style its name took over from there. I have tried a number of Avery beers recently. This is the one I will reach for in the future. redlight (1498), Winter Park, Florida, USA
