General66 (96), Streator, Illinois, USA Apr 29, 2008 22 ounce bottle shared with Illini08 and nimrod. Pours a deep amber color with a small white head that disappears quickly. I let this one warm up quite a bit before smelling it. When I did I was hit with a lot of hops, caramel malts, and some citrus fruits. The taste was dominated by a strong hop character with hints of suggary malts and a bitter aftertaste. Of the barleywines that I have had, this is probably my favorite so far. I am looking forward to trying some of my other BW’s that I have aging...
cgarvieuk (2546), Edinburgh, Scotland Oct 6, 2008 Bottle at Beer tasting i organised at work ...copper ... sweet slightly malty and lots of pine hop ... Sweet juicy fruit ... very sweet but over hoppy for me ... little oily ... too bitter in linger ... 17thfloor (730), Chicago, Illinois, USA Oct 4, 2008 [Fresher bottle] Pours a slightly hazy dark red orange with a nice creamy off-white fluff on top. Sweet aroma of piney and citric hops, rich lightly toasted caramel malt, ambrosia/fridge. I must admit this is an excellent american strong, really nice balance. Sweet lightly toasted caramel malts, not overly sticky, toasted or too sweet. Juicy citrus and earthy pine in perfect balance. Very flavorful without being over the top. A bit of cedar. The finish is great too, very clean with the sweetness dropping off quickly and the bitterness hanging around. Medium body, just full enough without being sticky at all, large but very soft carbonation, extremely quaffable. Balance is the key here. Moosington (15), Costa Mesa, California, USA Oct 3, 2008 22 Ouncer from Hi-Times. I have only had 5-6 in this style, so my assessment might be biased for now. Nice dark copper pour. Nose of caramel, candied fruit, heavy but pleasant hops. Flavor profile is a great balance between the hop charge and the sweet candied fruit and caramel. Extremely consistent with the nose. Finishes sweet, but the hops linger perfectly. As has been mentioned, the 9.2% definitely creeps up on you because you wouldn’t know it even without aging. Boliv (147), New York, USA Sep 30, 2008 Bomber. Pours a hazy brownish copper with little head except for some froth at the edge of the glass. Aroma of piney/citrusy hops, caramel, dough, and sugar. Hops up front on this one with a nice bitter surge, sweet dried fruits and caramel, then fading to a sweeter finish with some occasional bitter notes. Very smooth for 9.2%. Leaves an attractive white lacing on the glass. I bet this would be good in a few years as well. uhre (290), Denmark Sep 17, 2008 The beer was not fresh, so not that much hops. Dark amber nice head. Aroma of hops and caramel. The flavor is hoppy although not as much as it has been. Lots of caramel too.
