theisti (1638), Leawood, Kansas, USA Feb 2, 2009 12 oz bottle from MaltOMeal. Pour is hazed golden, settles nicely
with a 1 1/2 inch rocky white head. Falls with pretty lacing. Aroma of
faint citrus hops, bright bitterness. Taste is grassy orange citrus
hops, slight bitter, mineral toast maltiness behind that, more grassy
bitterness in the finish. Nice balance. Palate is medium, grassy dry,
mouth coating, tingling carbonation. Nice one, thanks Bill. joe1510 (501), Illinois, USA Jan 19, 2009 12oz Bottle
Received this in a recent trade with russpowell, thanks for all the great beer Russ! Avery’s IPA pours with a clear deep golden body and faint but noticeable orange highlights, especially when backlit. The dense cotton white head grew to two fingers and eventually fell to one leaving sticky arched lacing on its way. A few streams of carbonation bubbles work their way to the surface. Each drink leaves behind more sticky lacing.
There’s a good deal of earthy citric hoppiness as soon as I take a whiff. Orange and grapefruit dominate although the orange comes out on top. There’s not a whole lot of malt present but what’s there does the job nicely. The malt profile comes across as pale and somewhat cake like. I prefer my IPAs on the hop dominated side of the spectrum and this delivers.
The expectations the nose laid down are met and surpassed in the flavor. The pale maltiness is there but the hops are the showcase of this beer. The grapefruit jumps out at me right away with the orange close behind. Finishes with a zesty citric zing and a touch of malty sweetness to keep the hopping from running out of control. This is a very good IPA.
The body of this beer really fits well. Medium bodied with a snappy carbonation that keeps things moving quickly. The bitterness is there at first but grows and grows with each sip.
A very easy drinking IPA. The citric leanings make it all at once refreshing and bitter. This glass is disappearing very quickly.
This is an excellent IPA from Avery. I’ve passed this one up over and over again in favor of seasonals and such. This teaches me to start picking up more of the year round offerings instead of passing them by. Thanks again for a quality IPA Russ.
6/21/08 Alldaydrinker (557), Norwood, Massachusetts, USA Jan 18, 2009 Draught. Pours a golden color with a small white head. Nose of citrus, floral, resin, caramel. Initial taste of good hop floral character backed by some citrus and caramel. Mid palate to finish with lots of hop character and grainy/bready notes in the background. Head retention was above average. Palate duration was average. DuffMan (2719), the land of bitumen, beef & beer, Alberta, Canada Jan 15, 2009 Clear golden pour. Pretty stinky footy aroma mixed with piney hops. Poor malts underlie a nice load of hops, leaving this unbalanced. Clearly this rating goes against the general consensus here, so I may have got a contaminated bottle. I’ll have to try this again. Beerjunkie87 (4), , Massachusetts, USA does not count Jan 13, 2009 I had this on draft at a great beer joint and I love this beer. The marigold color is very appealing with a light white head, The flavor is nice and hoppy with floral and citrus notes, I got mostly orange maybe a little lemon. It’s very smooth. I would definitely recommend this as a solid IPA rmussman (905), California, USA Jan 12, 2009 Sampled a bunch of times in Boulder. Has a very nice hoppy finish. Well worth a try. CaptBier (301), Birmingham, Alabama, USA Jan 11, 2009 Bottled. An orange-amber beer with a slight haze under a thick bubble beige head. The aroma is very grassy and grapefruity - very fresh. The flavor is sweet and very hoppy at first with strong notes of grass, then a hay character comes along, to be overwhelmed grapefruit notes, which carries thru to a dry hay like and very bitter end. Somewhere in the middle a slight note of caramel creeps in - but this is mainly a hoppy beer nice. RedSox2004 (353), Pacific Palisades, California, USA Jan 11, 2009 Pours hazy gold/orange with a one-finger head that retained well and lev=ft nice intricate lacing. Subtle herbal and flowery scent with a touch of citrusy hops. Bitter hops flavors dominate the taste, mostly grapefruit and orange peel, with a solid caramel malt backbone to keep it in balance. Lively carbonation, medium mouthfeel, and a citrus and bready lingering aftertaste. Not as over the top with the hoppiness as I expected, but a very good beer.
