BeerBiker (1384), Odense, Denmark Jan 15, 2008 Very nice orange look with good offwhite head with notes of grapy and flowery armoes with following flavornotes of similar experiences. Longlasting dry and bitter finish for a very good beer for the style. Doon (89), Phoenix, Arizona, USA Jan 12, 2008 12.oz bottle at City Beer in SF. Pours an cloudy amber/golden color with head that dissipates guickly. Strong citrus aroma with a big dose of hop. Mouthfeel is somewhat heavier than I expected, almost thick. It was pretty amazing in the balance of flavor and aroma. This is a definate winner! AmEricanbrew (1747), Louisiana, USA Jan 10, 2008 12 oz. bottle pours a clear amber hue with a nice off white head. Has a strong grapefruit aroma. Nice medium body. The taste is a strong grapefruit bitter flavor with a malt sweetness that sneaks in the back door. Finishes with a bittersweet after taste.
Very nice.2003
zebracakes (1214), Washington DC, USA Jan 7, 2008 Bottle. Pours hazy orange yellow, white head. Aroma is citrus, wheat, malt, grass. Flavor is citrus, hops: crisp, fruity, floral. No peat! I like it. kevd193213 (477), Hope Valley, Rhode Island, USA Jan 5, 2008 Draught at the Falling Rock Tavern, Denver. Aroma of hops, hops and hops. Light golden pour. Strong hoppy finish. drawde (115), San Francisco, California, USA Jan 1, 2008 Golden and clear. Sweet aroma. Rather smooth;not bad, a mixture of peach and apricot flavors--but not bitter enough for an American IPA in my opinion.
[Tasted next to a Racer 5]
The Racer 5 is way more bitter, way more grapefruit, and--in my opinion, a better West Coast IPA. That said, the Avery is better than most IPAs and---depending on what you’d like--may be preferable. Skyview (4007), Papoose Jct., Minnesota, USA Dec 31, 2007 Picked up a single 12-oz bottle at Cellar’s Wine & Spirits in St Paul, MN. Pours a semi-hazy orange amber brew with a thin off-white head that quickly dissipates to a thin white ring. Aroma of distinct grapefruit and piney hops with a light caramel malt in the background. Taste is typical bitter IPA style with a medium bodied, light carbonation with flavors of grapefruit zest, some multi-grain and caramel malt with a touch of white pepper. Finish has a mild bitterness with a lingering grapefruit aftertaste. It’ll keep the hopheads happy. MrRain (415), O’Fallon, Illinois, USA Dec 28, 2007 12oz bottle poured in a shaker. I bought this as a one-off in Granite City Illinois. Avery IPA pours dark yellow with a fluffy white head. The nose has an almost lemony scent to it mixed with something sweet that I can’t quite identify. It’s not honey though. The spicy hop flavor comes as a surprise after the sweet smell. The hops seem a little forced and not well integrated but all-in-all enjoyable. The finish is full of hop resin. Hopheads should enjoy this if they keep in mind that this isn’t intended to be an IIPA.
