Commercial Description:
In the 1700's one crafty brewer discovered that a healthy dose of hops and an increased alcohol content perserved his ales during the long voyage to India (as depicted in our label) to quench the thirst of British troops. Today, we tip our hat to that historic innovation by brewing Colorado's hoppiest pale ale. Avery IPA demands to be poured into your favorite glass to truly appreciate the citrusy, floral bouquet and the rich, malty finish. Brewed by hopheads for hopheads!

Bottle. Pours hazy orange yellow, white head. Aroma is citrus, wheat, malt, grass. Flavor is citrus, hops: crisp, fruity, floral. No peat! I like it.

Golden and clear. Sweet aroma. Rather smooth;not bad, a mixture of peach and apricot flavors--but not bitter enough for an American IPA in my opinion. [Tasted next to a Racer 5] The Racer 5 is way more bitter, way more grapefruit, and--in my opinion, a better West Coast IPA. That said, the Avery is better than most IPAs and---depending on what you’d like--may be preferable.

Picked up a single 12-oz bottle at Cellar’s Wine & Spirits in St Paul, MN. Pours a semi-hazy orange amber brew with a thin off-white head that quickly dissipates to a thin white ring. Aroma of distinct grapefruit and piney hops with a light caramel malt in the background. Taste is typical bitter IPA style with a medium bodied, light carbonation with flavors of grapefruit zest, some multi-grain and caramel malt with a touch of white pepper. Finish has a mild bitterness with a lingering grapefruit aftertaste. It’ll keep the hopheads happy.

12oz bottle poured in a shaker. I bought this as a one-off in Granite City Illinois. Avery IPA pours dark yellow with a fluffy white head. The nose has an almost lemony scent to it mixed with something sweet that I can’t quite identify. It’s not honey though. The spicy hop flavor comes as a surprise after the sweet smell. The hops seem a little forced and not well integrated but all-in-all enjoyable. The finish is full of hop resin. Hopheads should enjoy this if they keep in mind that this isn’t intended to be an IIPA.

Pours a somewhat cloudy honey color, Thinnish white head of small bubbles. Smells of malt more than hops which was surprising but good. Honestly it almost has that sweet type of Belgian smell to it. But it tastes like an IPA. Bitter with a very sweet finish. Lots of hops up front and the malt comes in and sweetens it up. Palate is a little on the thick side but not too thick. A good amount of carbonation. A different take on IPA I think. Very good though. More malt flavors than I usually find in an IPA, but still just the right amount of hops and bitterness.

Pours hazy orange. Nice thick white head. Aroma is floral with hints of citrus. Good hop bite. Would be a good choice for a session beer.

Pours a smoky amber with a thick white head that quickly subsides. Excellent lacing. Nose is reminiscent of grapefruit. A bit thin on the palate, but this is made up by a nice hop/malt blend. Mouthfeel is a bit thin, but not overly so. taste is hoppy, but a little unbalanced. Nice lingering aftertaste. A solid 2nd-tier IPA. An excellent choice when introducing a novice to the mysteries of the hop.
