williamherbert (461), Syracuse, New York, USA Jul 29, 2009 The appearance is clear straw yellow with a rocky off-white head. See-through with some bubbles sticking to the glass. Cloudier with a more vigorous pour.
The smell is resiny hop up front; woody. Some roasted rye-like malts. A nice balance, but quite bitter all the way around.
The taste is roasted pale malts at first, followed by some pine/spruce. Really hoppy in the woody sense. The malts leave a burnt aftertaste, which is perfect for balance.
In the mouth, the malt sticks around all over the tongue; thick and creamy and hella nice. It’s a very nice, woody, pale IPA. randolphjj (88), Raymore, Missouri, USA Jul 29, 2009 Coppery gold with a thin white head, bottle pour. Nice nose of that citrus I like in a pale. Not a big IPA, but more of a session IPA. Reliable stand-by. phaleslu (425), Cincinnati, Ohio, USA Jul 23, 2009 12 oz. bottle from Mt. Adams Bar & Grill in Cincinnati. Pours gold/amber with small white head. Moderate carbonation. Aroma of hops and citrus, flavor of the same, primarily hops, with a little sugar and spice to boot. Definitely an above average IPA but not nearly in the class of Avery’s Maharaja. minch25 (346), Columbus, Ohio, USA Jul 23, 2009 Orange, thin head. Medium bodied. Floral, hoppy, citrus - orange, grapefruit. A good, reliable wash-down-some-greasy-food ipa. arminjewell (100), Minneapolis, Minnesota, USA Jul 21, 2009 Poured orange/red with a nice white head, nose full of citrus and floral hop notes. Thick palate of full hop flavor with little malt backing, allowing a nice bitter finish. An excellent example of an IPA! jonno (542), Brisbane, Australia Jul 19, 2009 Decent enough IPA, very much in the English mold. Quite balanced and lively, with a moderate hop presence. Couold use a bit more assertiveness, but I could see people turning to this when they are hopped out. Solid. mattvervack (20), Atlanta, Georgia, USA Jul 11, 2009 I hope I am rating this properly, as I noted the rules dont allow a separate listing for the cask version of an existing beer. So this was a cask version that was apparently dry hopped with Apollo hops. The waiter was very excited about the aroma and said that the entire cold room smelled great when they tapped it. So this is very hoppy. And the aroma was lovely, of citrus and grapefruit. But the appearance was very off-putting, very cloudy. The taste initially was pleasing of very strong citrus fruits, but the underlying beeriness was missing and the aftertaste not "more-ish". In a blind tasting I am not even sure you would have identified this as a beer, maybe more like a grapefruit soda. The bitterness left an unpleasant feeling in the mouth. I understand that this is for hopheads only, but by not using more restraint and better hopping techniques you are ruining what might be a good beer. I have had plenty of dry hopped beers and they dont need to end up so thick and cloudy. MaltDawg (778), Richmond, Virginia, USA Jul 10, 2009 (Sample Date: 6/12/2009 Source:Capital Ale House - Downtown) Spicy citrusy hop nose. Clear orange golden with moderate fluffy white head. Citrusy spicy hop flavor with supporting caramel sweetness. Medium body and mouthfeel. Medium fairly bitter finish. Solid IPA with good balance.
