Commercial Description:
In the 1700's one crafty brewer discovered that a healthy dose of hops and an increased alcohol content perserved his ales during the long voyage to India (as depicted in our label) to quench the thirst of British troops. Today, we tip our hat to that historic innovation by brewing Colorado's hoppiest pale ale. Avery IPA demands to be poured into your favorite glass to truly appreciate the citrusy, floral bouquet and the rich, malty finish. Brewed by hopheads for hopheads!

Clear almost pilsner yellow with a touch of orange and has a fine white head. Aroma of fruits (citrus), hops and flowers. A bit of yeasty notes (wheat). Softly carbonated with a smooth feel. Fine balance between the powerfull hops and sweet malts. Fine lacings on the side of the glass. Nice bitter hoppy (Sharp & soapy) finish that is lasting. Great IPA!

Clear, dark gold color with a thin head. Very odd hop aroma. It’s a mix of US hops (tons of citrus) and English hops (dry earth). But the taste leaves nothing to the imagination about where this was brewed. Lots of citrusy hops. Very dry finish, but doesn’t get grainy and disgustingly bitter. Just a nice bitter, if that made sense.

2004 bottle. Pours a medium light shade of orange, with some bright gold-yellows. Very clear. Moderate foamy white head. Smells straightforward. Lots of high alpha hops aroma, citrusy but also a lot of dryness. Flavor begins with a large dose of bittersweet hops, like a ripe naval orange, moving in to some dry malting, with more floral hops notes towards the finish. Body is medium to medium-light. No trace of alcohol. Complexity is lacking. Having had 4 or 5 Arcadia IPAs the night before, I can definitely detect the lesser quality in Avery’s IPA. No interplay of malt and hops, and the hops flavor sings a single note for most of the beer.

Rerate Bottle purchased at Hop and Leaf Feb 2005. Much better than I remember or just good relative to all the crap I drank in TN?? I’d like to think that this one is a bit better, with more complexity of hops and a good, if somewhat light malt base.
