Taste is very hoppy with some malt base and light spice. Pine and citrus hops present here. Finish is not too bitter; very mild for an IPA. Overall, a middle of the pack IPA. **** Fresh dry-hopped cask at Trappeze. Probably the best IPA or pale ale cask I’ve ever had. Really big fruit notes in the aroma and flavor. Really nice. I’ll average the 4.4 I’d give the cask with my bottle rating. islay (480), Minneapolis, Minnesota, USA
| 4 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 8/10 | 3/5 | 8/10 | 4/5 | 17/20 | Feb 18, 2007 Approximately 4 oz. sample from a 12 oz. bottle at an American IPA tasting hosted by tennisjoel. This was the ninth of ten IPAs that we tried. Fascinating, unique aroma features peach, apricot, tangerine, pomegranate, pear, and other fruit notes, all of which are also present in the flavor. Classic pine fragrance from Northwest U.S. hops. There is also an almost curry-like smell. Pours a clear, dark gold with a small amount of short-lasting white head. The floral, fruity, sugary flavor is sweet, but the sweetness seems to derive from the hops rather than the malt. Full-bodied but lively in the palate. Avery IPA is one of a kind and reminiscent of a double IPA in complexity. It gets an extra point in the overall score for uniqueness. It finished third on my list in the tasting, behind only Surly Furious and Two Hearted. Nihon (240), Vernon, Connecticut, USA

Received this in a recent trade with russpowell, thanks for all the great beer Russ! Avery’s IPA pours with a clear deep golden body and faint but noticeable orange highlights, especially when backlit. The dense cotton white head grew to two fingers and eventually fell to one leaving sticky arched lacing on its way. A few streams of carbonation bubbles work their way to the surface. Each drink leaves behind more sticky lacing.
There’s a good deal of earthy citric hoppiness as soon as I take a whiff. Orange and grapefruit dominate although the orange comes out on top. There’s not a whole lot of malt present but what’s there does the job nicely. The malt profile comes across as pale and somewhat cake like. I prefer my IPAs on the hop dominated side of the spectrum and this delivers.
The expectations the nose laid down are met and surpassed in the flavor. The pale maltiness is there but the hops are the showcase of this beer. The grapefruit jumps out at me right away with the orange close behind. Finishes with a zesty citric zing and a touch of malty sweetness to keep the hopping from running out of control. This is a very good IPA.
The body of this beer really fits well. Medium bodied with a snappy carbonation that keeps things moving quickly. The bitterness is there at first but grows and grows with each sip.
A very easy drinking IPA. The citric leanings make it all at once refreshing and bitter. This glass is disappearing very quickly.
This is an excellent IPA from Avery. I’ve passed this one up over and over again in favor of seasonals and such. This teaches me to start picking up more of the year round offerings instead of passing them by. Thanks again for a quality IPA Russ.
