Commercial Description:
Mephistopheles is the crafty shape shifter, the second fallen angel. Amazingly complex, coal black, velvety and liqueurish, this demon has a bouquet of vine-ripened grapes, anise and chocolate covered cherries with flavors of rum-soaked caramelized dark fruits and a double espresso finish. Mephistopheles is the final installment of "The Demons of Ale" series.

12oz bottle from November 2006. Last time I had this beer I hated it, so let’s hope time has healed all wounds. Black pour with a medium beige head. Malty aroma of licorice and alcohol with hints of chocolate and coffee. Alcohol flavor up front with chocolate and a coffee finish. Definitely calmed down over the past few years and is drinkable now.

Strong aroma of coffee and chocolate. This stout is pure blackness and even brown head. Strong chocolate taste. There is some roasted malt here. The finish is a little too much alcohol burn. Great.

Pours out opaque black, ruby around the edges, with disappearing tan head. The ruby notes are very nice. The aroma is of molasses, chocolate, roasted malt, soy sauce, tar, alcohol, and caramel. The alcohol is a little bit harsh, since this batch is young (08). Flavors match the aromas, molasses, tar, burnt sugar, roasted malt, with roasty coffee after taste. Mouthfeel is moderate and warming. Overall, a good imperial, probably even better when aged a few years.

wow, a very black shiny velvet presentation with a head. the roast flavors were a bit in a single dimension and the obvious fruit blended with some malt related esters.strange and compelling.

It pours dark, almost black, and thick out of the bottle. The head is brown and fairly thick. The aroma is roasted and malty with hints of dark berries and chocolate. Strangely, I might smell some pinaple as well. The flavor of this beer is increadibly dense. There are hints of chocolate, malt, coffee, and some bitterness. This is a very serious stout and is not for a beer drinker who doesn’t like strong flavor. For a beer that is so thick and has so much flavor it feels fairly light in the mouth. A strong offering for a stout.

Dark black pour with a one-finger mocha colored head. Nice lacing. Malty cherry dark chocolate nose. Amazing. Big alcohol and malty, dark chocolatety tongue, low carbonation, heavy mouth all the way down. Finishes off with the 15% alcohol. Burn! Good beer.

Black pour with a thick brown head. Big malty nose with some dark fruit and coffee and a touch of vanilla. Flavor is very, very rich malt with hints of sugary coffee, plums, figs, and vanilla. Big alcohol presence and a syrupy palate. Very complex, very big and dark, and very good.

Batch 2 (2006). Pours a deep brown opaque color with a medium creamy tan head. Nose is rich and vibrant, dark fruits, rum, coffee, dark chocolate, vanilla and alcohol. Initial taste is vinous tangy fruits backed by sweet luscious chocolate, mollases and coffee. Dark fruits also become apparent. 2 Years the later the alcohol presence is very acceptable and blends quite well into the flavor, touch of warmth and spiciness going into the finish. Finishing with an outstanding palate duration and good hop balance. Mouthfeel is viscous with an acceptable carbonation balance. Full bodied. Head retention and spot lacing is excellent. Definitely very sweet for imperial bringing the flavor and overall down a point each.
