Commercial Description:
Mephistopheles is the crafty shape shifter, the second fallen angel. Amazingly complex, coal black, velvety and liqueurish, this demon has a bouquet of vine-ripened grapes, anise and chocolate covered cherries with flavors of rum-soaked caramelized dark fruits and a double espresso finish. Mephistopheles is the final installment of "The Demons of Ale" series.

Batch 2 (Nov 2006): 16.03% ABV.
Batch 3 (Nov 2007): 16% ABV.

Batch 4 12 oz bottle purchased from EZ Liquors. Pours an oily slick deep dark black with an average to large mocha foamy head. Aroma has lots of alcohol, dark fruits, figs..raisins..prunes..plum, dates. It seems to be a combination of dark chocolate diped cherries and rum balls. Palate is silky smooth and despite this one being served a tad to warm the alcohol, although noticeable and warming, was in check for a 15.92 ABV. Flavor is very sweet with lots of dark fruit and syrupy alcohol. I am suprised that this one does not have the classic roasted/burnt taste but the sweetness is really needed to balance out the almost 16 ABV. Time to grab another bottle or two to see how this will mellow out with a few years on it.

Nov 2007 bottle. Pours thick and inky black, with a thin khaki head, good lacing. Even right up at the edge of the glass, almost no light penetrates. Smells of molasses, coffee, fig and alcohol. Thick, velvety body. Dark chocolate, and coffee are the predominate flavors, with subtle fruit, oak and spicy undertones. Surprisingly little alcohol flavor considering the strength, part of that is due to aging. A touch on the sweet side of balanced, with only a gentle bitterness in the aftertaste.

Bottle. Black pour, brown head. Aroma is chocolate, coffee, roasted malts and dark toast. Flavor is overpowering and I really didnt enjoy the stouts battle with the alcohol. Way to much alcohol going on in this.

Not bad, but not my favorite imperial. Too much head and too much alcohol taste to compete with the best. Still good though. Roasted oak, molasses, chocolate. Maybe a hint of whiskey.

Black tar in a glass: brief, minimal head. Licorice smell. Heavy oak, bourbon, raisins, molasses, with an almost overwhelming alcohol finish. Not a traditional imperial, but a well-named raunchy character suitable for the most extraordinary of occasions.
