Commercial Description:
Mephistopheles is the crafty shape shifter, the second fallen angel. Amazingly complex, coal black, velvety and liqueurish, this demon has a bouquet of vine-ripened grapes, anise and chocolate covered cherries with flavors of rum-soaked caramelized dark fruits and a double espresso finish. Mephistopheles is the final installment of "The Demons of Ale" series.

[bottle] Poured like an impy, smelled like an impy, but just did not like the taste. Way too much burn in this beast. Once you get past the alcohol, there is some molasses, coffee, and dark fruits. After a few sips there was a lingering burn in my throat which lasted for quite some time. Nowhere near worth the $8+ a bottle.

Thanks lb4lb. Pours a nice dark black brew allowing some light through the pour. The head was about a finger thick, creamy, and chestnut brown. The aroma is sweet, malty, chocolate, coffee, woody, alcohol, molasses, a little fruity. The flavor shows very hot alcohol, woody and roasty, sweet, chocolate, molasses. Nice smooth velvety mouthfeel. Could have been better with less alcohol.

The color was dark brown/black. The head was creamy and dark tan. The aroma was alcohol, molasses, chocolate, vanilla, and wine. The flavor was soy sauce, vanilla, meat, smokey, alcohol, and coffee. The palate was thick-bodied. The finish was warm.

Batch 3, Nov 2007. Poured pitch black and thick with a tan head. The aroma was a rich mixture of chocolate, caramel, fruit and a hint of alcohol. The flavor additionally had some hops, some bitterness, more alcohol and sticky sweetness. The mouth feel was viscous smooth and a warming alcohol feeling that travels down to your stomach. I felt this stout was over the top - too sweet and too much alcohol. It reminds me of those NY deli sandwiches with six inches of meat in between the slices of bread. If I wanted that much sandwich, I’d have three sandwiches with two inches of meat. The Mephistopheles stout is likewise unbalanced. I’d rather have a more modest and better balanced imperial stout.

2007 batch. absolutely huge. I really think that this could do a lot from letting it age. Deep and robust and very warming. Perfect for a cold night. Not as sweet as I was expecting for a beer of this alcohol %.

Bottle at home. 2006... thanks to TheCheeseMan for this ... Deep black no head ... chocolate and cherrys in nose ... warming alohol ... full on mouth feel ... vanilla and some other whiskey tones ... lots of roast and chocolate and coffee ...some raisin... BUT There just a bit too much visible alcohol for me.

this is an amazing beer. the abv catches you completely off guard. scent is of coffee and taste is full of flavor with coffee, licorish, cherry tartness, and a little bit of hops. alcohol is hidden well, but can certainly be experienced. as soon as you swallow, you get the warming sensation of the alcohol. i would recommend this beer to anyone who could handle a dark imperial stout. this is an excellent beer.

Aroma of dark fruit, coffee, chocolate, and malt. Taste is very strong with alcohol. Flavors are again chocolate, malt, and dark fruit. Strong alcoholic swallow but real good. Very strong flavors overall. Indeed a great brew. Would buy again.
