Commercial Description:
Mephistopheles is the crafty shape shifter, the second fallen angel. Amazingly complex, coal black, velvety and liqueurish, this demon has a bouquet of vine-ripened grapes, anise and chocolate covered cherries with flavors of rum-soaked caramelized dark fruits and a double espresso finish. Mephistopheles is the final installment of "The Demons of Ale" series.

Batch 2 (Nov 2006): 16.03% ABV.

Nov. 2006 bottle. Yikes. My high hopes for this big boy were let down. Extremely raw, unbalanced, and probably the booziest beer I’ve had to date. I know it’s 16%, but geez...is is suppose to be that hot? This thing needs years to mellow out. Other than that - the mouthfeel was a bit thinner than expected. A nice aroma, but not really all that complex - mostly dark chocolate. Kick ass appearance in the snifter...picture perfect. But in the end, it was really just s huge alcohol bomb and the drinkability suffered big time!

Thanks to Crizay and boboski for the two bottles sent. Batch 2. Pours pitch black and sports the smallest of brown heads. Smells of booze, chocolate, coffee and cherries. Flavor is hot, with notes of chocolate and sorta metallic, Palate is heavy, slick and creamy.

Bottle shared with Häki. Batch 2. Bottled in November 2006. Pours a nice pitch black colour with a light brown head leaving a good sticky lacing. Pleasant roasty aroma with chocolate, coffee, liquorice and some alcohol. The flavour is very nice with roasted malt, bitter chocolate and coffee, dark fruits, some liquorice and a good sweetness. The alcohol is present but very well hidden. Long lasting dry and bitter roasty finish. Very good brew indeed!

Old rating March ’06? Black beer, hardly even any crimson in the edges. Aroma is dark malt, licorice, maybe some vanilla. Taste is moderately roasty with dark fruits, vanilla, and alcohol. Mouthfeel is thick, really thick, only slightly less than Expedition/Dark Lord.

Bottle. Threw the bottle away but it said 16.6% abv or something. Pours deep brown almost black with a quickly disapearing head. Aromas are sweet with notes of brandy, toffee, plum. Flavor is also sweet with raisin, chocolate, caramel, figs, vanilla, and alcohol. Finish has a touch of tartness but is dominated by the malty and honey laced sweetness. It’s good and complex but too sweet.

12 oz bottle (batch 1) - Totally opaque black color with smallish light brown color with nice lacing. Aroma is very creamy, sweet, notes of light vanilla, fair amount of burbon, hint of molasses, dark rum, light oak, bit of figs and dates, faint red grapes. Flavor is full of chewy kilned malts, light caramel, bit of subtle roastyness, notes of cherry, vanilla, honey, oak, toasted figs, red grapes, faint pepper spiceyness. Finish is fairly sweet, though it falls short of being cloying, with a touch of alcohol warmth as it drops down. Palate is very thick and silky. A very nice, extravagant brew overall, and actually hides its alcohol fairly well. I like it.
