Commercial Description:
Mephistopheles is the crafty shape shifter, the second fallen angel. Amazingly complex, coal black, velvety and liqueurish, this demon has a bouquet of vine-ripened grapes, anise and chocolate covered cherries with flavors of rum-soaked caramelized dark fruits and a double espresso finish. Mephistopheles is the final installment of "The Demons of Ale" series.

Batch 2 - Black with a lasting brown head and some lacing. Sweet aroma of cherries, chocolate and alcohol. Very sweet as it hits the taste buds, but that seems to get washed away quickly. Alcohol extremely well hidden. Complex.

Pours black as night with a very thin brown head. Aromas of coffee and some alcohol. Very sweet, almost to sweet. Alcohol is very apparent. Should have been better for a stout that was 9 dollars. Wasn’t to impressed.

Bottle, thanks to MrRomero, big aroma, dark, fruits, maybe some sort of soy sauce, maybe some tobacco, and some leather. Pours jet black with a nice flufffy and fairly long lasting light brown head. A bit of metallic notes, sweet, and very roasted, with a twang of acidity from the roast. Alcohol is notible but tollerable considering the %. As i continue to sip more rich coffe and chocolate notes begin to stand out. Hops are just barely noticible. More of a malt bomb than anything. It’s good for a high alcohol brew I prefer it too WWS. But this is not as good mindblowing as other imperial stouts.

bottle courtesy of my friend Scott- tanish head, jet black in appearence. Chewy as I expected, with a roasted sweetness. Coffee finish, with a lot of warmth going down. Boozy, and good.

Bottle from Corral Liquors in Granite City, IL. Batch 2; November 2006. Pours jet black with a large, creamy, dark brown head that diminishes to a thin layer. On the nose are: molasses, chocolate rum cake, licorice, dark fruits and a definite hit of alcohol. You can get a high off of just smelling this stuff. Full-bodied, oily and soft with a dry and lightly metallic finish it adds a hit of alcohol to the mix, as well. The flavor is a sweet, almost syrupy, front of chocolate, dark fruits, tart cherry-like sweetness, and faint coffee, transitioning to a dry, roasted and fairly hot finish. I’m amazed at how sweet this beer remains given its ABV. It’s definitely different and interesting, but I think this one might mellow to a better balance with a couple more years under its belt. At $6 per 12 oz bottle, however, I’d much rather have a couple Expeditions.
