MrBendo (1039), Swedesboro, New Jersey, USA Apr 11, 2007 Updated: Oct 10, 2008Thanks to scubatrip for the bottle. Batch 2. Pours near black with a medium head. Aroma of burnt charcoal and burnt chocolate. Pungent. Taste brings in burnt coffee, burnt wood and burnt licorice.
Full++ body, rushes to your stomach like hard liquor. Thick and oily texture. The alcohol really can’t be hidden at levels like this. I’m getting more used to this as I work through the bottle. Better as it warms up. I’m glad I finally tried it. mreusch (715), Olathe, Kansas, USA Apr 11, 2007 Bottle; pours thick and black with a foamy three finger dark tan head and decent lacing. Strong aroma of worschester/BBQ sauce and liquid smoke. Flavor is very alcohol forward, with what seems to be a bittersweet hops bite @ the outset, quickly falling back to strongly roasted/burnt malts. Super thick and coating on the palate, full body is an understatement. This one’s more about alcohol than complexity. Agree with other posts that this is definitely a sipper, and of course gets better as you go. golubj (1275), Sunnyvale, California, USA Apr 8, 2007 Bottle. Aroma is a little weird, some alcohol and light roasted malt. Palate burns a little initially but remains relatively smooth. Flavor is mostly of sweet malt and roasted chocolate/coffee. Bitter and slightly sour finish. Nice but really strong. Veer (355), Landskrona, Sweden Apr 6, 2007 Aroma: pungent, funky, sour water, big hops, enormous malt profile... alcohol, pine smoke, salty liquorice, burnt and sweet.
Appearance: outrageously dark w/ a brown foam.
Flavour: initial bittersweetness, very powerful, sourish & malty... dry, burnt aftertaste. Very potent berry aftertaste.
Palate: very thick, powerful, really full-bodied, warming, fruity...
It feels old and evil hapjydeuce (763), Del Mar, California, USA Apr 3, 2007 Updated: Oct 2, 2007Nov 2006 bottle. Wow....my god, dark as midnight appearance, it absorbs all surrounding light sources! rich aroma of molasses, coffee, roasted/burnt barley and double dark chocolate. Darrrrk tan head, like you would see floating on top of an espresso shot. Body: sweet syrupy cherry goodness at first, with hints of licorice, caramel, tons of chocolate and a good hoppy bitter & caffeinated finish. The high alcohol content is a major warming element in smoothing out the palate even more. so thick and chewy, I think the ABV was a tad too much however. Zinister (1199), Houston, Texas, USA Apr 1, 2007 This beer is fantastic, I’m not sure if I can even give it justice with a review. Pours a beautiful dark molasses with a great tan head. Very sweet nose with loads of bourbon, dark malts, and chocolate cherries. Friggin’ great! Taste just spectacular with a great full bodies mouth feel that lingers with thick malt, sweet dark fruits and coffee....great beer. Worth every penny. coldbrewky (716), Saugerties, New York, USA Apr 1, 2007 Updated: Apr 3, 2007Black pour with tight dark tan/brown head Sweet fruity bourbony nose that leads to first taste of the day.....Showdown at high noon. Oh my great good god! An excelent example of the yin and yang of good and evil. I must find more of this..... 16.03% Mule kicking without lunch. Wonderfuly evil Yikes. thedm (3833), Fort Wayne, Indiana, USA Apr 1, 2007 Another beast of a brew from Avery! This bottled brew from a bottle shop poured a medium sized head of foamy fine to medium sized dark brown colored bubbles that were mostly lasting and left behind an opaque dark black colored body with no visible carbonation and an excellent lacing. WOW! The aroma was vinous syrupy medicinal molasses and dark malt. The strong medicinal vinous mouth feel was weakly tingly and smooth at the start and strongly tingly at the finish with a strong kick in th arse strong malt hop biting aftertaste. The strong flavor contained notes of vinous. Delicious and one I would certainly buy again. My lord what kind of monster did they make here? Way too strong but I liked it anyway. Devilish indeed!
