Commercial Description:
Mephistopheles is the crafty shape shifter, the second fallen angel. Amazingly complex, coal black, velvety and liqueurish, this demon has a bouquet of vine-ripened grapes, anise and chocolate covered cherries with flavors of rum-soaked caramelized dark fruits and a double espresso finish. Mephistopheles is the final installment of "The Demons of Ale" series.

Batch 2 (Nov 2006): 16.03% ABV.
Batch 3 (Nov 2007): 16% ABV.

Cellared for 1 year. Black motor oil pour, low head, some lace. All fruits and alcohol aroma. Yikes, lot of alcohol, this burns on the way down like a spirit. Smokey malt and wood fires, buttery dark fruits and alcohol dominate. Hard to differentiate between hops and alcohol. Very thick, I hope this mellowed in cellar. Mighty, mighty brew.

Pours out pitch black with light head. Smell is roasty boozey. Tastes are strong coffee, dark chocolate and sweet syrup. Flavors of dark fruits, caramel, and rum. Some bitterness from the hops and nice toasty flavor from the malt. Very rich and complex beer.

12 bottle from batch 3, served in a clear pint glass. Motor oil black, like many big stouts, with a thick dark head. I was pleasantly surprised with this beer. Many people told me that the alcohol was to present in this, but I thought it was well balanced. It could be that the one I had was aged two years, but I have no base to compare. Nose is dark chocolate, espresso and fruits. Taste is much the same with enough roasty malts to go around. This reminded me of an amped up version of the czar, which I enjoyed so much I wanted to put on tap at my house.

Black in color with thick dark tan head.... Aroma has hints of oak and maple syrup.... Alcohol content is apparent in aroma... Flavor is extremely sweet, hints of brown sugar, maple syrup, black cherry, dark chocolate and vanilla.... Very malty, alcohol content lingers on the palate and gives it nice balance... Phenomenal...

A bottle from batch 4. Pours black with a light brown head. Notes of chocolate, cherries and espresso. Simply delicious. Sadly, you can’t get this one in my state.

12oz bottle into snifter - batch 4. Pours ptich black with medium beige head which leaves quickly. Aroma is dark chocolate, espresso, dark fruit, and alcohol. Taste is dominated by huge bitter dark chocolate and tons of alcohol warmth, roasty bitterness stays on the tongue for a while in the finish. This is basically a boozier Czar. I think this would be better served wtih several years in the cellar.
