djtimeless (170), Florida, USA Jun 10, 2009 Pours out pitch black with light head. Smell is roasty boozey. Tastes are strong coffee, dark chocolate and sweet syrup. Flavors of dark fruits, caramel, and rum. Some bitterness from the hops and nice toasty flavor from the malt. Very rich and complex beer. drseusszb200 (183), Florida, USA Jun 8, 2009 batch 3 bottled in 2007 drank in 2009. pours black with a dark head. smells of chocolate, oatmeal, coffee. tasted of expresso, dark chocolate, and oatmeal with a slight alcohol aftertaste. ljay6880 (132), , Pennsylvania, USA Jun 5, 2009 12 bottle from batch 3, served in a clear pint glass. Motor oil black, like many big stouts, with a thick dark head. I was pleasantly surprised with this beer. Many people told me that the alcohol was to present in this, but I thought it was well balanced. It could be that the one I had was aged two years, but I have no base to compare. Nose is dark chocolate, espresso and fruits. Taste is much the same with enough roasty malts to go around. This reminded me of an amped up version of the czar, which I enjoyed so much I wanted to put on tap at my house. Diogène (543), Gatineau, Quebec, Canada Jun 4, 2009 Bottle. Pitch black with a medium chocolate head. Average retention and lacing. Aroma is chocolate, alcohol, coffee, sugar, hops, roasted malt and honey. Flavor is very similar with a liquorous mouthfeel. baraciisch (138), USA Jun 4, 2009 Black in color with thick dark tan head.... Aroma has hints of oak and maple syrup.... Alcohol content is apparent in aroma... Flavor is extremely sweet, hints of brown sugar, maple syrup, black cherry, dark chocolate and vanilla.... Very malty, alcohol content lingers on the palate and gives it nice balance... Phenomenal... nerdrocker101 (102), Atlanta, Georgia, USA Jun 3, 2009 A bottle from batch 4. Pours black with a light brown head. Notes of chocolate, cherries and espresso. Simply delicious. Sadly, you can’t get this one in my state. mcmd (132), Louisville, Kentucky, USA Jun 2, 2009 12oz bottle into snifter - batch 4. Pours ptich black with medium beige head which leaves quickly. Aroma is dark chocolate, espresso, dark fruit, and alcohol. Taste is dominated by huge bitter dark chocolate and tons of alcohol warmth, roasty bitterness stays on the tongue for a while in the finish. This is basically a boozier Czar. I think this would be better served wtih several years in the cellar. opheliablue (1), Texas, USA does not count Jun 2, 2009 Bottle, batch #4: I don’t usually go for stouts but the label made me buy it. I get a good amount of chocolate and coffee in the aroma, along with something almost fruity or floral. The appearance lives up to its name.. I doubt the devil’s heart is any blacker. I find the flavor to be sweet actually.. common of stouts? I wouldn’t know. I definitely experienced alot of hops, which is good because I love hops. Overall, the sweetness and richness of the flavor balance the high alcohol content, but I would have liked more aroma.. something to cut through the dark richness besides just alcohol fumes. But then that would be too perfect and I would kill myself drinking too much of it!
Dark.. coffee.. stroooong. I feel raped.. I love it!
