Commercial Description:
Mephistopheles is the crafty shape shifter, the second fallen angel. Amazingly complex, coal black, velvety and liqueurish, this demon has a bouquet of vine-ripened grapes, anise and chocolate covered cherries with flavors of rum-soaked caramelized dark fruits and a double espresso finish. Mephistopheles is the final installment of "The Demons of Ale" series.

black monster, spicy nose atop heavily roasted coffee. Fizzy mouthfeel, spicy, gingery flavors akin to anchor christmas yet twice as thick, 3 times as hot, and 10 times as potent.

12oz bottle from the Pizza Port bottle shop. Wow! One of the sickest labels I’ve seen on a beer. (If you’re not from Southern California, sick means cool). All giggling aside, this brew is no joke. Poured an almost midnight black with a creamy, milk chocolate brown head that thinned out and left some great lacing. Nose of alcohol, roasted coffee, cocoa dust, chocolate, and some candied dark fruits. Body was HUGE, sweet and chocolaty with a boozy bite to it. A great brew from a great brewery!

Man this beer is a little over bearing. Pours black with a nice tan head that lasts. The aroma kinda smells like molasses. Flavor is also of molasses. Light esters in the back ground. Body is very heavy and thick. I can really feel the alcohol on my stomach. It has kind of a lingering alcohol after taste. This beer is good, but not worth the $7 I paid for it.

Black as black can be on the pour, thick head that lingered for a while. Aroma of coffee, and some bittersweet chocolate. The alcohol does seep through in both taste and aroma, but it doesn’t overpower anything. Flavor is quite interesting, coffe, some nice bitterness, cherries and other dark fruits. As the beer warms up, you do get a bit of an alcohol burn that would probably mellow nicely with some age on it.

A hugly dark brown pour. An aroma of malt and alcohol. A flavor of toasted mallt, alcohol and chocolate. A full rich palate of thick creamy chocolate. A very sweet, smooth beer. Excellent. Youi could say that I loved this beer.

Black with a thick light brown head, nice lacing. Carmalized sugar and powdered sugar sweet smell. Very sweet sugar/alcohol flavor with some blackened malt and coffee essence to slightly temper the sweetness. The 15% kicks in at the end and makes me shiver like I’ve had a straight shot of hard liquor. Like the Beast, this is too sweet and too boozy. 11/06/2006

Bottle from BevMo. Batch 3 (11/07). Black in color upon pouring. Strong roasty smell that is somewhat sweet. Quite a bit of alcohol. Rich flavor with a slightly fairly sweet maltiness. Decent amount of hoppiness, but it is a little masked by the alcohol. Quite warming as it goes down. Too young, but still pretty good. I’d imagine you could lay this one down for a bit.

Batch 2, 12 oz. bottle, thanks to a trade with dirty_martini. Pours an opaque black with a thick, creamy, frothy brown head that lasted through the entire glass. Aroma is chock full of raisins and prunes with some licorice notes as well. These same qualities are in the flavor too, however, after a few seconds, they are washed over by the immense alcohol. As the alcohol finally recedes, a bit of mocha and some hops bitterness struggle to reach the surfsce. This is a really good beer, but I think I would like it even better if the alcohol were toned down just a bit.
