Commercial Description:
Mephistopheles is the crafty shape shifter, the second fallen angel. Amazingly complex, coal black, velvety and liqueurish, this demon has a bouquet of vine-ripened grapes, anise and chocolate covered cherries with flavors of rum-soaked caramelized dark fruits and a double espresso finish. Mephistopheles is the final installment of "The Demons of Ale" series.

Batch 2 (Nov 2006): 16.03% ABV.
Batch 3 (Nov 2007): 16% ABV.

Queen’s Day in Amsterdam. Drinking the last bottle from Coldbrewky. A mean black pour with murky brown head. This looks like some stout. Nose of roasted malts and dark chocolate. A smashing taste of chocolates, caramel, dark fruits and roasted malts. It’s really powerful but also really creamy and goes down well. The high ABV barely noticeable. Thanks again Steve for yet another excellent brew.

12 oz bottle-batch 1 January 2006. I have been anticipating this beer now for a few months. Many have regarded it as Avery’s crowning jewel for them as a brewery, taking them to the next level. Charred black with a fizzy brown head with some nice swirly action. Some decent legs, but the beer doesn’t look that thick so to say. Aroma of sweet milk chocolate, big vanilla bean, woodsy (oak), blackend charred malt, coca, tobbaco, but not much alcohol for such a big beer (may be covered by all the sweetness). WOW, now thats an overly sweet beer (something that has brought down all of avery’s beers). Lots of vanilla, chocolate, char, roast, dark fruit (cherries) and a huge alcohol kick in the finish (not really fussel, but definately warms a little). The body is not as big as I thought it was going to be-somewhat flimisy for such a HG beer if you ask me. Overall, the beer lacks great depth found in alot of imperials (expedition and dark lord to name a few), especially in the oversweetness and thin body of this drink. I dont think this beer has any aging potential. for a 15.1% beer, its fairly hidden, but still shows itself. Very over-rated in my book so just give me another Expedition!

Super dense black, thick creamy lasting dark tan head. Rich and very complex nose of chocolate covered cherry, mocchachino, currant, almond biscotti, and dark bread, with faint smoky tones. Intense and bold flavors of roasted chocolate, port, candied berries and nuts, and mild espresso, with a soft kiss of hop bitterness late. Sweet, yet not annoyingly so. ABV is well hidden, warming, and not noticed until standing. Yikes! Massive full bodied, soft carbonation, bittersweet finish. Certainly worth the price of admission in my book. Right up there with Dark Lord and DFH WWS....

12 oz bottle special thanks to slob. Deep, deep dark pour with a very brown head that faded. Aromas were wonderful. Caramel, Toffee, Plum, Roasted chocolate, Rum Cake. Flavors very sweet and cherry up front. More Dark fruit and chocolate in the middle with a strong alcohol flavor. The finish is the alcohol warming mixed with coffee. Remains sweet all the way through. What a great beer! Thanks a bunch Bert!!!!!!!

Black with a huge thick and creamy tan head. Strong oak maple and molasses in the aroma. Taste of oak and molasses with a strong alcohol taste.

Slightly thicker pour than medium viscosity, settling in as impenetrable and jet black in the snifter. Creamy mocha tan head sits on top like a thick cobweb, and frapped lacing forms from the get-go. Aroma ignites with plums, rum raisin, lactic chocolate, caramel/turtle liqueur chews, and brown sugared and blackened porridge. Massive flavor contention and milky chocolate wonderment. Verbose, demonstrative substance keys up dark chocolate truffles that were melted in the car, eventually evolving to take on parallels with mocha fudge brownies. It’s like spooning out delicatessen, liquefied chocolate from a secret project at Godiva. Burnt confectionary chocolate slabs trade blows with hot alcohol, which spawns a cackled black pepper underbelly. Thick, dispersing and commanding palate presence with a syrupy reconnaissance that registers several seconds after each sip. Tongue scrape and an invasive throat culture. Amped up on all accords and balanced extremely well. A slight burn seeps down the esophagus while dark chocolate covered espresso beans summarize the bitter-sweet testament that will stand the test of time.

Thx to SoLan. I was doing my Cisco run, but it’s gonna have to wait. Poured a very dark body with a pretty sizable head, but not quite motor oil dark. Aroma is extremely alcoholic with darker fruits, vanilla, chocolate, roast, coffee and caramel. Finishes sweet with an alcohol burn. You’d never guess 15%, but it’s obvious it’s more than 5. Ahhh it burns iit burns! I got another bottle that’s gonna be sitting for at least a year I hope. This was very tasty, and if the alcohol can balance out this’ll be a sick beer.
