The aroma is alcohol, wood, coffee, very bitter chocolate, some bread, and some rum. The flavor has a ton of coffee, a good helping of bitter chocolate, some charcoal, molasses. It is very sweet in general. Raisins and rum come out in the aftertaste. After several sips a nutty flavor emerges, as well. This is some good stuff, but there is a bit too much syrupy sweetness. Methinks brother Mephistopheles would benefit from a few years in the cellar. StewardofGondor (1934), Washington Heights - Milwaukee, Wisconsin, USA
| 4.3 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 8/10 | 4/5 | 9/10 | 5/5 | 17/20 | Mar 15, 2006 Slightly thicker pour than medium viscosity, settling in as impenetrable and jet black in the snifter. Creamy mocha tan head sits on top like a thick cobweb, and frapped lacing forms from the get-go. Aroma ignites with plums, rum raisin, lactic chocolate, caramel/turtle liqueur chews, and brown sugared and blackened porridge. Massive flavor contention and milky chocolate wonderment. Verbose, demonstrative substance keys up dark chocolate truffles that were melted in the car, eventually evolving to take on parallels with mocha fudge brownies. It’s like spooning out delicatessen, liquefied chocolate from a secret project at Godiva. Burnt confectionary chocolate slabs trade blows with hot alcohol, which spawns a cackled black pepper underbelly. Thick, dispersing and commanding palate presence with a syrupy reconnaissance that registers several seconds after each sip. Tongue scrape and an invasive throat culture. Amped up on all accords and balanced extremely well. A slight burn seeps down the esophagus while dark chocolate covered espresso beans summarize the bitter-sweet testament that will stand the test of time. ABUSEDGOAT (1934), California, USA
| 4.1 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 8/10 | 4/5 | 8/10 | 4/5 | 17/20 | Apr 3, 2006 Thx to SoLan. I was doing my Cisco run, but it’s gonna have to wait. Poured a very dark body with a pretty sizable head, but not quite motor oil dark. Aroma is extremely alcoholic with darker fruits, vanilla, chocolate, roast, coffee and caramel. Finishes sweet with an alcohol burn. You’d never guess 15%, but it’s obvious it’s more than 5. Ahhh it burns iit burns! I got another bottle that’s gonna be sitting for at least a year I hope. This was very tasty, and if the alcohol can balance out this’ll be a sick beer. Shag (1923), Chattanooga, Tennessee, USA

The aroma is fantastic with some chocolate, raisins, dates, and licorice. The flavor is really sweet and velvety with a strong dark fruit presence. I taste raisins, chocolate, licorice, marshmellows, and molasses. Give this one a few years to mellow out and it will be perfect. But its still one of the better stouts Ive had however its nothing you would want to sip on all night. Good choice for #1200. ucusty (1922), Wake Forest, North Carolina, USA
| 3.3 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 7/10 | 3/5 | 8/10 | 2/5 | 13/20 | May 25, 2008 Batch 2 Inky black pour with an extremely small tan head. Sweet malts on the nose. Full velvety mouth feel with chocolate and alcohol. Very hot finish. I should of let i sit a little longer. Kevin (1920), Colorado, USA
| 4 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 8/10 | 5/5 | 7/10 | 3/5 | 17/20 | Mar 23, 2006 To get ready for this I waited until the sun was setting and I put some Danzig in the CD player. Dazing 4 actually just for the song call on the dark. It seems appropriate. Brand new god is playing as I contemplate opening this. It is cloudy out and cold. The sun is setting but no one can tell the dark is creeping across without announcement. Tonight is the night to unleash Mephistopheles. This monster pours a pitch oily black that looked like crude coming out of the bottle and sitting atop it is a thick arrogant brown head. I could smell the booze from this dark demon before I finished pouring. Also in the nose are plums, plump raisins, and cheesecake. I cupped my petrus glass in both hands to take the first sip and I tasted rocket fuel, then I started to pick out ultra sweet mango, pineapple, super sugared chocolate, and the kind of sweetness that would kill a diabetic at 30 yards. I like it. Oh yeah, I’m hearing the words from, can’t speak as I try to wrap my mind around this. It is appropriate. I think I need more than a 12 oz er I wish Avery still made bombers of their BIG beers. Third sip is so evil and mean with alcohol and sweet flavors attacking my taste buds. Something port like, something like a mocha coffee blend, something like everything I have tasted in a stout but uncontained and wild. This tastes like the beast but with more chocolate and that is not a bad thing. But the finish is the same as I remember slick, fruit but with cocoa and the slightest coffee. Plum and green raisins also play a large part in this. But it is choc full of chocolate and incredibly sticky. The alcohol is much more prevalent than some stronger impy’s I’ve had. I really need to get a hold of a few more to age. Oh yeah here comes the song I was waiting, oh can you see it now how black your future will be, oh can you see it. Until you call on the dark. A nice beer that can only get better

| 4.6 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 9/10 | 5/5 | 9/10 | 5/5 | 18/20 | May 10, 2006 12 oz bolle, dated Jan 06, Batch 1. Thanks to The_Epeeist! Black with a nice brown head that never goes away. Nose is pungent, complex - fruity, with prune, black cherry, chocolate, grape - almost cordial in nature, with a pleasant sweet roastiness. The flavor is very bold - sweet black cherry, light prune, chocolate liqueur. Definate alcohol warmth in the gullet. Body is thick, oily. It will be interesting to see how this matures. marcus (1911), Sacramento, California, USA
| 3.9 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 6/10 | 4/5 | 8/10 | 4/5 | 17/20 | Jul 14, 2006 From 1FASTi. This dark brown ale poured with a modest tan head that lasted a while. There was a malty prune-like aroma. The flavor is very sweet with a carbonated mouthfeel - very complex and syrupy. A very fine brew.
