Aroma is a ton of butterscotch, caramel, chocolate, mollases, and raspberries. Taste is very fruity, with chocolate, raspberries, coffee, espresso, strawberries covered in chocolate. An amazingly complex beer which hides the alcohol superbly well (unlike the other avery imperial stout). Super Amazing beer, and on par with Dark Lord, the only complaint is, the body is slightly to thin, but still lovely. marcus (1896), Sacramento, California, USA

There was a malty prune-like aroma. The flavor is very sweet with a carbonated mouthfeel - very complex and syrupy. A very fine brew. jeffc666 (1895), Fairfax, Virginia, USA
| 1.9 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 4/10 | 4/5 | 3/10 | 3/5 | 5/20 | Jun 1, 2006 Updated: Jul 2, 2006Deep dark black body. Really nice looking creamy dense brown head. The aroma is typical huge imperial stout. Sweet chocolate, raisins, alcohol, roasted malts. The flavor is overwhelming sweet and alcoholic. The sweetness assaults you up front and then the alcohol beats you into submission. Way too sweet IMO. Some complexity comes out once the palate recovers from the initial shock.Loads of raisins bitterness but no citrus which I really like in an IS. Slimy sticky full bodied. Not to my tastes at all. Ultimately a very simple brew that fails to showcase anything well and fails to be palatable. emacgee (1892), Chapel Hill, North Carolina, USA
| 4 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 8/10 | 4/5 | 7/10 | 4/5 | 17/20 | Apr 2, 2008 Thanks lb4lb. Pours a nice dark black brew allowing some light through the pour. The head was about a finger thick, creamy, and chestnut brown. The aroma is sweet, malty, chocolate, coffee, woody, alcohol, molasses, a little fruity. The flavor shows very hot alcohol, woody and roasty, sweet, chocolate, molasses. Nice smooth velvety mouthfeel. Could have been better with less alcohol. Beerdedone (1885), Croydon, Pennsylvania, USA

Now i am no fan of stouts, but this is definitely the best i have ever tasted. Pours dark with a brown head, aroma of fruit, roast, and alcohol. Flavor is roast, carbonation, fruit, coffee, and smooth. stegosaurus (1882), Levittown, Pennsylvania, USA

Flavor is roasted malts, carbonation, fruit, slight coffee, and smooth i can’t believe this is 15.1%, slight bitterness, this is my idea of a perfect stout. iowaherkeye (1872), Los Angeles, California, USA
| 4.2 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 9/10 | 5/5 | 8/10 | 4/5 | 16/20 | Oct 18, 2006 Rating 500. Someone better tell me congrats in the forums, or else I’ll be pissed. 12oz, Bottled in JAN 2006, Batch 1. Pours an oily black with a 1/2 finger dark brown head. Aroma of grapes and juicy raisins at the same time, a little soy, red wine, dark chocolate, nondescript wood and earthiness, ETOH, light roasty malts and coffee, some brown sugar sweetness. Woo, complex. Flavor is much more sweet (brown sugar and molasses) than expected (the whole flavor, really)--almost like an English barleywine--with some soy and booze coming on fairly strong . Finish is boozy with earth and wood, fairly sweet. After the finish the roasty coffee bitterness shows up, though not terribly strong. This is very different from most of the impy stouts I’ve tried. I wondered why the roasty malts and coffee were so far in the background in the aroma, now I know. Full bodied, moderate carbonation for the style. Very good, just not what I was expecting. | 3.7 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 8/10 | 4/5 | 7/10 | 3/5 | 15/20 | Apr 28, 2006 Whoooa! This thing kicked my ass! Huge overdone alcohol kick in the crotch, just by way of introduction. (This could stand some calming-down in my cellar for a few years.) Saturated flavors and syrupy near-cloying textures combine to overwhelm the palate. This sucker is not an easy-drinker, by any means. Sticky sweet dried fruits, like bourbon-recontstituted dates and liquor-soaked figs, reign supreme. Some sour cherry rum ball action as well. Chocolate and espresso bitterness wrestling around in the sweaty mosh pit for domination. But really...this is just way too young and impetuous as released. Let it mellow a couple years and then let me know what you think!
