The aroma is huge cherry flavored chocolate. The body is very nice and thick and very complex. Lots of alcohol and red fruit up front with a nice big smooth chocolate finish. The cherries come back into play in the aftertaste. This is very very fucking good. ElGaucho (1730), Minneapolis, Minnesota, USA

Sandwiched around a Stone Vertical Epic 05-05-05, I had a Alesmith Speedway Stout and then the Avery Mephistopheles. Not bad, eh? Smells a lot like the Speedway. Has a sweet, hop aroma. Fully opaque body with a good-sized, light brown head. Excellent lace. Alcohol is very pronounced. In fact, although both this and the Speedway had strong alcohol at initial MF, that for the Avery lingers. There is more sweetness and some sourness perhaps than in the Speedway. Somewhat chalky. Clearly elite. plovmand (1729), Helsinge, Denmark

Roasty aroma with lots of dark fruits, brown sugar, sweet malt, tobacco and chocolate. The mouthfeel is medium creamy. Loads of sweet malt, chocolate, caramel, dark fruits and rum and it ends up sweet and alcoholic. jake65 (1725), Williston, North Dakota, USA

Thin, spiderweb lacing. Nose is rich with chocolate, dark fruits, and caramel. I get a little graham cracker sensation as well. Taste is full of chocolate fruitiness, coffee, and roasty tones. Started off a little harsh, but once the glass warmed up a bit the flavors really start to stand out. joet (1709), Fulton, California, USA

| 4.9 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 10/10 | 5/5 | 10/10 | 5/5 | 19/20 | Jul 29, 2006 Bottle from John (JPDIPSO) Thank you!! So Ive been waiting to try this one for months since I found out about its release. Then I signed up for the random 12 pack swap with Joe (degarth) and this thing was in there, so I could hold on no longer. Pours out black and with a fat tan head. Smell is full of chocolate, cherries, grapes, coffee, hops, and a tan of alcohol. Taste is smooth, thick, rich, sweet, and perfect. It is so unbelieveably thick it reminds me of a sweeter version of dark lord. This is an awesome beer, no alcohol detected at all. Avery got it right with this beer, proving they are one of the top breweries in the country. Simply fantastic, and I can only imagine what it will be like in another year or 2. A tad less alcohol kick to this and it would be a perfect 5. 15% is high and it is detected for a few sips towards the end of the glass, but other than that, it does a fantastic job of hiding it within its dark body. Pours with a big beautiful brown lasting head....lacing is all that!-coco head sticks....Alcohol is very well masked for such a large abv....quite sweet!....not much balanced when it comes to sweet/bitters but for a massive beer like this, it doesn’t detract....is very intense + delicous....mouthfeel is amazing...sometimes you have to spoil yourself-..spoil yourself-..spoil yourself....... blipp (1703), Newark, New Jersey, USA

Roasted aroma with dark chocolate, wood and a hint at cherry like fruit. Palate is bit boozy and harsh, but it really doesn’t diminish the overall experience. Roasted flavor, a bit sweet even, with dark chocolate and a long coffee finish. Very nice.
