Commercial Description:
Mephistopheles is the crafty shape shifter, the second fallen angel. Amazingly complex, coal black, velvety and liqueurish, this demon has a bouquet of vine-ripened grapes, anise and chocolate covered cherries with flavors of rum-soaked caramelized dark fruits and a double espresso finish. Mephistopheles is the final installment of "The Demons of Ale" series.

Pours an oily black color with a decent but not huge. Excellent lacing. Strong mocha, tawny, and alcohol aroma. The sweetness of this beer smacks you in the mouth immediately but eventually gives way too dark chocolate and dark roast coffee. The warming sensation of the alcohol is similar to a port wine without giving you the unpleasant pure burn that other weaker beers are sometimes guilty of. I almost regret drinking this beer just so I could try it again for the first time. Excellent.

’06 batch, this is a beautiful beer in both appearance & aroma. Complex nose of sweet summer fruits, chocolate, & coffee. Deep, dark brown with a full mocha colored head that lingers. The flavor is just as complex, supported very well by the aroma, and all the influences present in it. Nice warming effect from the alcohol without much of a burn, with chocolate, cherries, and somewhat of an apricot influence. Finish is just the slightest bit bitter and coffee like. Very nice brew.

Thick, deep tan creamy head. dark brown body. Aroma is something to concentrate on. I was ready to dismiss it as too young or something... but it has rich, velvety chocolate, alcohol, coffee, molasses, light soy sauce. Tastes very roasty and thick, but with a sweet anise presence throughout. Raisins, cherries, roasted chocolate. Mmmm.... this goes down a bit too easy.

12oz bottle/Batch 1 (1/2006) Black as night during a new moon. As opaque a beer as I’ve ever seen. Head is tan, thick and creamy. aroma is syrupy sweet with raisin, oak and a weird mustiness. Flavor is dominated by alcohol and a little fruit, with the roastiness somewhat reserved in the background. Even though this isn’t oak-aged, I get a hint of vanilla. Really is a nice beer, but it’s just too much. A total palate killer.

Bottle - Many thanks to jonboy32818 for this one!
Deep black, creamy head. Pours like oil. Tiny brown head. Aroma of strong malts (liquor, roasted). Moderately bitter, moderately sweet flavour. Very heavily bodied. Nicely well balanced flavour, the only downside is the alcohol. You taka sip and think ’oh, that’s a nice flavour’, but then the alcohol suddenly pops which is not so nice.

Aroma is a deep roasted scent that makes me think of chocolate cake baking. Color is solid black with good carbonation and a thick tight head. Taste is thick and rich. Starting with a full body it goes down creamy with a rich feel. Finish comes in sharp with a rich sweet roasted flavor with some fruit tones then turns to a brandy like feel. After taste hits you with a strong alcohol feel like you just took a sip of brandy. As you drink it you grow accustom to the alcohol feel and the fruit flavor become more apparent. Overall it is an intense brew but the alcohol feel is a bit overwhelming.

Pours a jet black color that is extremly thick and molasses like (viscous). Nose is a bit alcoholic, dark fruit, chocolatem and some roast. Taste is sweet and syrup like with lots of sugar and some alcohol. I liked this one but it did not blow me away.

1st batch bottle from the great richlikebeer. Black oily pour. Tight dark brown head. Left amazing lacing. Nose is thick! There is an alcohol component in the aroma, with licorice and abstinent. I quiver with antici-------&# Well. This is black licorice and bitter chocolate and the texture of molasses (taste too). The warming come slight after the first sip. The tongue is playing craziness. There is sour, then a soy sauce comes in, then sweetness. This is a real complex brew here. I taste caramel also. The after taste is dry and leaves me wanting more. This lived up to the hype, for sure. I think I may be tasting some faint hops as I drink more of this.
