Commercial Description:
Mephistopheles is the crafty shape shifter, the second fallen angel. Amazingly complex, coal black, velvety and liqueurish, this demon has a bouquet of vine-ripened grapes, anise and chocolate covered cherries with flavors of rum-soaked caramelized dark fruits and a double espresso finish. Mephistopheles is the final installment of "The Demons of Ale" series.

Batch 2 (Nov 2006): 16.03% ABV.
Batch 3 (Nov 2007): 16% ABV.

Pours dark brown/black, with a brown head. Aromas are roasted malt, chocolate, coffee, dark fruit, and wine. Flavors are dark fruit, roasted malt, wine, chocolate, alcohol, and smoke. Rather sweet, but in a really nice way. An amazing brew, top notch in every way. Thanks to matta for this bottle.

Whoa! This is incredibly thick and heavy!!! The aroma is robust, with a hardy dose of malts and roasted nuts, mixed with prunes and even some cocoa. Despite the eclectic mix of flavors, it all complements one another. Very oily and dark, with a dark tan head. This will age well, I suppose, which will also mellow out the astringent hotness from the high alcohol. Woody and surprisingly vinous for an Imperial Stout. Watch out for this one!

Pours black with a small brown head. Aroma is of coffee and bourbon, lots of bourbon. Flavor is somewhat tasty, but its hard ot overcome the overbearing alcohol. This reminds me of an attempt at DFH WWS gone wrong.

Tasted blind at Sk8vikings amazing Porter/Stout tasting - Black body, big small bubbled head; Huge explosive nose, incredible deep, but the huge amount of alcohol apparent hides the complexity and makes it very hard to take apart; Very , very sweet body again lots of alcohol apparent together with just a little bitterness; Very, very long huge finish oxidized sweet, very warm, some warm fruit like sweet apple pie together with very sour apples and some licorice.

12oz bottle, batch 2. Continuing on the Johnny Corkscrew/xnoxhatex, stout-a-thon/brewday. Black opaque with burnt brown small head. Doughy aroma, with roasted grain, and bourbon alc characteristics. Flavor of a lot of those big alc, liquors, mostly bourbon, also chocolate, cookie, dark grains, very tasty. Creamy, full body. Very tasty and a lot less hot than the last bottle from this batch that I tried. Overall the alc is a lot more hidden than a 16% brew should be.

Bottled, January 2006: Pours pretty much black with a big, totally retained very dark tan colored head. Aroma is alcoholic with chocolate and dark fruit. Flavor is, per advertised, rum soaked dark fruit, some chocolate, alcohol, and a very respectable bitter hop finish. This beer exhibits finesse in terms of an Avery product. Good but not unbelievable in terms of impy stouts.

Bottle. Aroma is a little weird, some alcohol and light roasted malt. Palate burns a little initially but remains relatively smooth. Flavor is mostly of sweet malt and roasted chocolate/coffee. Bitter and slightly sour finish. Nice but really strong.
