Commercial Description:
Mephistopheles is the crafty shape shifter, the second fallen angel. Amazingly complex, coal black, velvety and liqueurish, this demon has a bouquet of vine-ripened grapes, anise and chocolate covered cherries with flavors of rum-soaked caramelized dark fruits and a double espresso finish. Mephistopheles is the final installment of "The Demons of Ale" series.

Reminds me of port wine. Aromas of raisins , plums, and not to steal everyone elses description but I’m totally getting soy sauce as well. The taste is overpowering on the alcohol. A sipping beer for sure. The sugary sweetness is left after the alcohol and none of the great aromas come through. It’s going to take me a while to drink this puppy.

Sample at Indy tasting Dick’s 96th - Aroma of alcohol, roasty dark malts, and milk chocolate. Pours black with small brown head and decent lacing. Flavor is very roasty and hides alcohol well. Wow what a tasty brew! Chocolate covered cherries and other assorted treats mix well to make every sip enjoyable. Palate is smooth and clean for such a huge brew. I need to get myself a whole one to savor and rerate.

12 oz bottle
Thanks to malachi for sharing this. It poured extremely dark with a tan head that faded slowly and left super thick creamy lacing on the side of the glass. The scent was very dense - vinous, coffee, cherries and bourbon all presented themselves. The inital mouthfeel was huge along with a whallop of alcohol. There were hints of coffee, cocoa powder, medicinal alcohol and cherries. After a few sips though the taste become too overpowering - this beer needs to be more moderated to make it palatable by a single person in one sitting. A little over the top but still solid. I think it might have suffered a little hype but it still a a great beer.

12oz bottle from November 2006. Last time I had this beer I hated it, so let’s hope time has healed all wounds. Black pour with a medium beige head. Malty aroma of licorice and alcohol with hints of chocolate and coffee. Alcohol flavor up front with chocolate and a coffee finish. Definitely calmed down over the past few years and is drinkable now.
