Commercial Description:
Mephistopheles is the crafty shape shifter, the second fallen angel. Amazingly complex, coal black, velvety and liqueurish, this demon has a bouquet of vine-ripened grapes, anise and chocolate covered cherries with flavors of rum-soaked caramelized dark fruits and a double espresso finish. Mephistopheles is the final installment of "The Demons of Ale" series.

Batch 2 (Nov 2006): 16.03% ABV.
Batch 3 (Nov 2007): 16% ABV.

12oz batch 2. Wow, extremely complex stout. Black. Thick and creamy with a whipped chocolate frosty head. Consistency is of Malted Chocolate Ovaltine. So much flavour, it is nearly impossible to comprehend. Rich malts, tons of chocolate, alcohol, sugar, syrup, caramel, and fruit.. maybe cherry and raspberry. Maybe a bit too much going on here

2008 bottle from whip in 117 in flower mound tx. poured black with a copper head. aroma was nice with dark fruits, vinous notes, caramel, chocolate, and coffee. flavor was awesome with all the same qualities as the nose with the addition of alcohol. the alcohol is masked pretty well for being near 16%. i might have to go pick some more up to cellar for a bit.

Bottled in Jan. 2006. Batch number one. Poured out a deep, dark, chocolate brown, with a huge mocha colored head. Aromas are of rum soaked, chocolate covered cherries right off the bat. Espresso coffee, toffee, slightly sour malty flavors. Thick body, rich and creamy mouthfeel. Strange fruity aftertaste. Alcohol is fairly well hidden, but burns your gut when swallowed. A very good RIS, IMHO.

Bottle from Holiday Wine Cellar: Pure black in color with a big, frothy, cocoa colored head. Aroma is rich dark fudge with a wiff of smoke and some brandy. Flavor starts rich dark chocolate with some strong coffee in the background followed by some port, a little alcohol presence and tongue numbing espresso finish with a sharp black licorice aftertaste. Full bodied and rich with a velvety mouth feel and fairly strong carbonation. 16% ABV becomes apparent. PRICEY.

Interesting, but I was expecting an Imperial Stout....this doesn’t seem like much of one to me. Pours a dark black with a thin tan head. Aroma of sugar, syrup, dark fruit. Thick body. 16% is very noticeable. I don’t see myself trying this one again.

Pours a deep dark brown with a brown head. Aroma is dark roast, chocolate, coffee, rasins. Flavor is roast, coffee, creamy, soy sauce, booze, dark fruits. A little over the top, but still enjoyed it.

9/26/09 notes: on tap, GABF. My first sample of the fest! Nose is rounded malt, a bit of milky chocolate and raisins. Palate is meaty and thick, with a long finish. Flavor has a bunch of sweetness up front . . . alcohol and sweet malt. Peaty flavors and brown sugar also are perceived. Not too much roastiness, which I had really hoped for. Perhaps a great winter sipper, but in general I found this beer too clunky. Should I blame the alcohol?

So it made it’s way too Tampa, the much talked about and sought after Mephistopheles, will it live up to the hype? It poured a deep dark black with nice tan head. First sip, wow, it’s extremely sweet, then a big dark chocolate flavor hit me. The more the beer warmed it seemed to get sweeter and sweeter but with the big dose of 15.1% with it, so this beer to me the alcohol was in there and big but it was a sweet alcohol that went down very smooth, you just have to drink it slow. Mostly dark chocolate but with slight coffee and fruit’s and the big sugar sweetness, it stays very creamy and smooth the whole time. The alcohol took this beer over a little too much, but it was good tasting, it just drowns out the other flavors for me at least, still very good tasting. This beer is not for the weak.
