Commercial Description:
Mephistopheles is the crafty shape shifter, the second fallen angel. Amazingly complex, coal black, velvety and liqueurish, this demon has a bouquet of vine-ripened grapes, anise and chocolate covered cherries with flavors of rum-soaked caramelized dark fruits and a double espresso finish. Mephistopheles is the final installment of "The Demons of Ale" series.

Thanks to scubatrip for the bottle. Batch 2. Pours near black with a medium head. Aroma of burnt charcoal and burnt chocolate. Pungent. Taste brings in burnt coffee, burnt wood and burnt licorice. Full++ body, rushes to your stomach like hard liquor. Thick and oily texture. The alcohol really can’t be hidden at levels like this.
I’m getting more used to this as I work through the bottle. Better as it warms up. I’m glad I finally tried it.

Interesting, but I was expecting an Imperial Stout....this doesn’t seem like much of one to me. Pours a dark black with a thin tan head. Aroma of sugar, syrup, dark fruit. Thick body. 16% is very noticeable. I don’t see myself trying this one again.

Bottle at EBF. Black, fizzy brown head. Deep salty liquorice, little tarry aroma. Intensive liquorice, sweet malty and tarry flavor. Warming liquorice and pepper in the finish. Full bodied, smooth low carbonation. A liquorice bomb, great!

12 oz bottle, batch #1. Enjoyed with friends at John’s homebrewed stout unveiling. Deep, dark pour. Mahogany in color if you hold it up to the light, but it’s very opaque. The aroma is deep and complex, though not as strong as I imagined. Caramels, charcoal, roasted malts, dark fruits (dates & figs), port like alcohol, and very light, but sharp hop hints. The first taste gives you a big surprise! A real explosion of flavors. Most definitely a dessert beverage. Plums, dates, chocolate covered cherries, caramel, hard candy, very well hidden alcohol and barely noticeable hops that do nothing to balance this malt monster. Wow. Creamy, slick, full body. This is going to age well. Jen took her taste to the kitchen and put a scoop of vanilla ice-cream in it. The resulting beer float was rather enjoyable, though I preferred mine untainted.

Black as a cave with a small creamy light brown head. Shoyu, teriakki sauce, Worcestershire sauce, a hint of liquid smoke, this smells like it would make one hell of a BBQ Steak marinade! Very sweet, wow, I wasn’t expecting that sweet of a flavor, like a liqueur filled chocolate, some vanilla bean and nutty flavors but the sticky sweetness overwhelms everything, even the alcohol. Has a vinous aftertaste, port-like flavors. Full bodied with a nice creamy feel. Overall it’s a tasty, interesting flavored, complex brew but it’s just too damned sweet to become one of my favorites. Odd thing is, I usually like thick sweet beers. Too much of a good thing.

Bottle. Pours coal black with a dark tan head. Burnt wood, tobacco and alcohol nose. Thick mouth feel. Liquid smoke, charcoal, dark fruits and even A-1 sauce. A train wreck of flavors, none of them subtle. This beer needs aging desperately.

Pours a black color with a thick dark brown head, also pours very thick. Aroma is of chocolate, coffee, dark fruits, and molasses. Very thick and full of flavors of chocolate, coffee, molasses, caramel, dark fruits and plenty of alcohol warming. Very delicious brew.
