Thick mouth feel. Liquid smoke, charcoal, dark fruits and even A-1 sauce. A train wreck of flavors, none of them subtle. This beer needs aging desperately.

Aroma is of chocolate, coffee, dark fruits, and molasses. Very thick and full of flavors of chocolate, coffee, molasses, caramel, dark fruits and plenty of alcohol warming. Very delicious brew. estoppel (1028), Buffalo, New York, USA

Port wine, raisins, currants, plums, perhaps some chocolate and coffee, sweet, not terribly bitter. Hides alcohol exceptionally well. Mangino (1027), Mississippi, USA
| 3.4 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 6/10 | 4/5 | 6/10 | 4/5 | 14/20 | Mar 26, 2006 Huge Thanks to Degarth for sending me this one. Pours a pitch black, small head the color of chocolate milk, a little bit of lacing. The aroma has too much alcohol in it. Just too astringent. Flavor starts out sweet, vanilla, oak and lots of chocolate gets almost too sweet, with a burnt alcohol finish. Interesting, and I can understand the high ratings… a solid stout. | 3.7 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 8/10 | 4/5 | 8/10 | 4/5 | 13/20 | Apr 3, 2008 Updated: Apr 4, 2008Bach Home Again Tasting - 12oz bottle - 2006 version: Pours like the dregs from an old oil can that was on your grandpa’s shelf in his garage for the past 18 years. Giant roast and chocolate nose tells of things to come. Thick, viscous mouthfeel. After the initial alcohol burn subsides, a healthy dose of sweet chocolate hits and continues through to the finish. Plentiful array of malts display everything from black coffee to subtle almond. Very good. trokini (1027), San Diego, California, USA
| 3.8 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 8/10 | 5/5 | 6/10 | 4/5 | 15/20 | Oct 10, 2006 Updated: Aug 27, 2007Black pour with a stocky brown head. Dense aroma of coffee, anise, and roasty malt. The flavor does not follow through. The sweet licorice overpowers the coffee and malt flavors. The fruitiness comes out in the back, but it only masks more of the malt and chocolate flavors. The alcohol is masked quite well, this just needs more balance. badnewsbeers (1026), Grand Rapids, Michigan, USA
| 3.9 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 8/10 | 4/5 | 7/10 | 5/5 | 15/20 | Jul 5, 2006 excellent beer, which could be even better if refined....nice black, syrup-like pour with reddish brown head...aroma is of soy, caramel, cream, roasted coffee and chocolate, and teryaki...flavor is huge in maple syrup and carmelized sugars...heavy in cream, coffee, and chocolate as well...alcohol isnt as present as expected with a 15% abv....flavor would be rated higher if not for the cloying sweetness...perfect, creamy palate TheBeerLover (1019), DC Metro Area, USA
| 4.8 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 10/10 | 5/5 | 10/10 | 5/5 | 18/20 | Apr 28, 2006 Avery has been putting out some pretty impressive beers, and Mephistopheles Stout, does not dissapoint. This beer as an Imperial Stout is huge in every way, and reminds me much of Dogfish Head World Wide Stout. Pours to an ink black color, with a slight tan head, that fades, and a soft carbonation. The nose on this beer is complex and intoxicating. Vinous aromas of sherry, and sour cherry, marry with aromas of licorice, espresso coffee, and peppery alcohol. The palate is slick and oily, with flavors of prune, raisin, fig, licorice, sherry, and espresso. This beer finishes with more huge vinous, prune, fig, and espresso flavors up front, then ends with lots of warming, peppery alcohol that lingers. At 15.1% abv, this is a type of beer you will want to slowly sip, and savor with a good book or movie. Phenomenal winter brew, and a really fantastic Imperial Stout.
