Commercial Description:
Mephistopheles is the crafty shape shifter, the second fallen angel. Amazingly complex, coal black, velvety and liqueurish, this demon has a bouquet of vine-ripened grapes, anise and chocolate covered cherries with flavors of rum-soaked caramelized dark fruits and a double espresso finish. Mephistopheles is the final installment of "The Demons of Ale" series.

Batch 2 (Nov 2006): 16.03% ABV.

Very dark black with a small head. Alcohol is in the aroma like a hard drink. Average mouthfeel and above-average stout taste, but very bitter really with sugar in the finish. A bit of coffee, chocolate and roast.

Bottle (12oz). Shared with blankboy, tupalev and Dave B - my bottle, acquired from Dave B. *Rating number 1300 for me (in less than a year!) and rating #1000 for blankboy - congratulations Paul, it’s been a hell of a blast rating beers this past year!!! Poured thick black, decent dark brown head. Aroma - wow! - deep dark bitter roast, baker’s chocolate, milk powder, molasses/caramelized burnt malt, roast coffee, light dry bitter hops, hardwood resin (oily, almost turpentine), alcohol - love it. Incredibly sweet and boozy taste - burnt sugar, molasses, figs, thick, syrupy, there’s yeast an cola and licorice - bitter and syrupy, but o man is this sweet. Thick, syrupy, lively, lightly carbonated, boozy start to finish, but amazing - I’ll share another one of these again!

This Imperial Stout pours a eclipse black stout from a 12oz bottle. Medium sized beige head. Aroma is chocolate and sweet. A full-bodied Imperial Stout. Malts are chocolate, coffee, sweet malts, vanilla and dark fruits. Big explosive malt character and flavors throughout this beer. Nice balance between the roasty malts and the chocolate sweetness. Fluffy carbonation, yet it has a thick and syrupy mouthfeel. Insanely smooth taste. Hides the 15.1% alcohol very well. I think it’s the first Avery “Big Beer” that you can drink right away. I like this one a lot. Only wish the aroma was a little stronger. Mouthfeel is full. Finish is clean and smooth. Aftertaste is slightly sweet.

November 2007. Bottle, aged approximately 1.5 years. Black body, with a small creamy brown head. Aroma is surprisingly fruity, with alcoholic undertones and malt. Sweet flavour has underlying fruit and light malt, very light acidity and bitterness in the finish. Dilute cherry notes. Full bodied, smooth palate. Less roasty than anticipated, and more fruity. Quite nice. 8/4/8/4+/17-18 - 4.2 <P>July 2006. Pours with a deep black body, and a moderate oily khaki head. Big alcoholic and fruity aroma of booze soaked raisins or grapes, milk notes of dark sugars. Perplexing first sip reveals a medium oily palate that almost *tastes* oily. Rich dark fruit with vague allusions to indulgent chocolate leads to fruit and slightly skewed roast that lingers long into the finish. The palate is intriguingly slick but not overtly thick. A contemplative sipper that takes a more refined approach to its plentiful helping of alcohol than some of its Avery kin. One of the most interesting beers I have sampled recently for sure. 9/4/8/4/17 - 4.2

Another beast of a brew from Avery! This bottled brew from a bottle shop poured a medium sized head of foamy fine to medium sized dark brown colored bubbles that were mostly lasting and left behind an opaque dark black colored body with no visible carbonation and an excellent lacing. WOW! The aroma was vinous syrupy medicinal molasses and dark malt. The strong medicinal vinous mouth feel was weakly tingly and smooth at the start and strongly tingly at the finish with a strong kick in th arse strong malt hop biting aftertaste. The strong flavor contained notes of vinous. Delicious and one I would certainly buy again. My lord what kind of monster did they make here? Way too strong but I liked it anyway. Devilish indeed!

Bottle. Extremely thick and pitch black colour with a creamy dark like impressive head. Wow aroma is extensively complex vinous with notes of liquorish, dry fruit, candies, toffee and slight hints of coffee, chocolate, nuts, spicy, roasted and maybe even wood notes as well. What a mouth full, of course the alcohol is present but in a pleasant way. It almost results in a tingling feeling in mouth and tongue but still contains some smoothness over the feeling. Some hoppy bitterness is in there to balance the beer. Full bodied and very extraordinary. Flavour was heavy sweet, but balanced with some burned candies like bitterness. Finish is sweet and long lasting. Remarkably balanced beer. Would love to try this one again. Thanks for sampling this fantastic Imperial Stout Jeppe! Re-Rate: #9 Bottle [Sk8viking great American blind tasting] Average brownish looking creamy head that mostly diminished. Spare display of lacework. Pitch black color. Aroma of sweet chocolate, coffee, roasted malt, dried fruit, liquorish. Over the palate came heavy alcohol and hint of smoke and bitter liquorish. Full bodied with an average carbonation and alcoholic texture. Moderated to heavy sweet flavor and good counter bitterness. Lingering bitter liquorish finish. 8 / 4 / 8 / 4 / 17 = 4.1
