Black opaque with burnt brown small head. Doughy aroma, with roasted grain, and bourbon alc characteristics. Flavor of a lot of those big alc, liquors, mostly bourbon, also chocolate, cookie, dark grains, very tasty. Creamy, full body. Very tasty and a lot less hot than the last bottle from this batch that I tried. Overall the alc is a lot more hidden than a 16% brew should be. shigadeyo (2263), Harrison, Ohio, USA

O.G. 1.142, 15.1% ABV. I decided to drink this one on this frigid, windy night to commemorate the first lasting snowfall of the season...
Avery Mephistopheles’ Stout pours an opaque, dark chocolate brown color (not quite all the way black). It initially has a dark brown head that receeds to a thin, oily veil. The aroma is very reminiscent of port with a hint of vanilla and smoke. The flavor is extremely rich and complex, dominated by very sweet liquorice, vanilla, and molasses, with a nice smoke and charred wood character throughout the finish. Hints of various other flavors can be detected with each sip. The alcohol is superbly hidden and well integrated into the flavor. No hops or other sort of bitterness, but this beer doesn’t really need it. I would have never guessed that there was 15.1% ABV just by tasting it! This beer is full bodied, thick like syrup, and super smooth and creamy. At times it almost seems a bit too sweet. Regardless, this is a great beer to sit back and enjoy for hours and was perfect for a cold night like tonight. xav33 (313), Midland, MI, Michigan, USA

12 oz bottle
Bottled 01/06, sipped 09/06
Medium pour in a snifter
Poured black with dark brown edges with a tiny brown mostly diminishing head with a wee bit of lacing.
Smelt of rich dark chocolate, coffee, licorice, and vintage port.
Taste was upfront strongly sweet and slightly acidic, dark chocolate and dried dark fruit, followed by a harsh bitter coffee taste that dies into a harsh coffee with cream and sugar and a vinous quality that linger mercilessly. Mouthfeel was full, syrupy, lively carbonated, and moderately alcoholic and moderately astringent towards the end.
Overall, an explosion of taste that results in a sipping beer. Took me well over an hour to finish one, and I can still taste different nuances I hadnt tasted to this point. LooseCannon (931), Norfolk, Virginia, USA

Aroma is very complex of chocolate and sweet. Taste chocolate and black cherrys with dry finish and with a alcohol warming, you will feel the alcohol. Grovlam (3809), Copenhagen, Denmark

Extremely thick and pitch black colour with a creamy dark like impressive head. Wow aroma is extensively complex vinous with notes of liquorish, dry fruit, candies, toffee and slight hints of coffee, chocolate, nuts, spicy, roasted and maybe even wood notes as well. What a mouth full, of course the alcohol is present but in a pleasant way. It almost results in a tingling feeling in mouth and tongue but still contains some smoothness over the feeling. Some hoppy bitterness is in there to balance the beer. Full bodied and very extraordinary. Flavour was heavy sweet, but balanced with some burned candies like bitterness. Finish is sweet and long lasting. Remarkably balanced beer. Would love to try this one again. Thanks for sampling this fantastic Imperial Stout Jeppe!

Bottle [Sk8viking great American blind tasting] Average brownish looking creamy head that mostly diminished. Spare display of lacework. Pitch black color. Aroma of sweet chocolate, coffee, roasted malt, dried fruit, liquorish. Over the palate came heavy alcohol and hint of smoke and bitter liquorish. Full bodied with an average carbonation and alcoholic texture. Moderated to heavy sweet flavor and good counter bitterness. Lingering bitter liquorish finish. 8 / 4 / 8 / 4 / 17 = 4.1

It’s not the type of beer that you can chug down, it’s much more sophisticated than that. This beer should be sipped very slowly given the high alcohol content. Besides it is so good that you will want it to last as long as possible. This is what an imperial stout is all about. mmmbeer (752), Austin, Texas, USA
