Mephistopheles is the crafty shape shifter, the second fallen angel. Amazingly complex, coal black, velvety and liqueurish, this demon has a bouquet of vine-ripened grapes, anise and chocolate covered cherries with flavors of rum-soaked caramelized dark fruits and a double espresso finish. Mephistopheles is the final installment of "The Demons of Ale" series.

Bottle @ EBF. Dark tan head sits atop a pitch black body. Full nosed roasted flavors or espresso, anise, burnt cherries and molasses. Doesn’t have the big alcohol kick I was expecting but you can tell it’s buried in there, oh yeah. Gooey, chewey and full of coffee and tobacco. Avery’s best yet.

Bottle. Black with a low brown head. Mad aroma. Thick, deep, spicy aroma of black sweetened coffee, dark malts, honey, pepper and alcohol. Huge flavour of black coffee, chocolatesauce, cherries, almond, port and honey with strong decadent notes of pure cocoa. long and thick warming aftertaste of black chocolate, alcohol, black pepper and cherries. Fierce!

Pours dark brown/black, with a brown head. Aromas are roasted malt, chocolate, coffee, dark fruit, and wine. Flavors are dark fruit, roasted malt, wine, chocolate, alcohol, and smoke. Rather sweet, but in a really nice way. An amazing brew, top notch in every way. Thanks to matta for this bottle.

Bottled in Jan. 2006. Batch number one. Poured out a deep, dark, chocolate brown, with a huge mocha colored head. Aromas are of rum soaked, chocolate covered cherries right off the bat. Espresso coffee, toffee, slightly sour malty flavors. Thick body, rich and creamy mouthfeel. Strange fruity aftertaste. Alcohol is fairly well hidden, but burns your gut when swallowed. A very good RIS, IMHO.

Thanks be to my wonderful wife that picked up some of this for me when I was too busy to make it out to the store.

Very opaque, zero light comes through. Pours slow and thick with a big brown thick viscous head. Lotsof small bubbles, occasional big one errupting through what appears to be hardened lava from a volcano. What is cool about the head is that it doesnt decrease, it more fades and leaves a thick lace. The nose is thick with alcohol coffee and is bitter. Interesting really because the taste is pretty different. Initally it is very strong and uber sweet, sugary, kind oflike grape skin, then more alcohol then quickly to malts and coffee then back to this sweetness. Yeast and sugar that is mostly fading.

Now not to knock either one of these beers but this reminds me so much of another one of my favourites and that is the Dogfish Head 120 min IPA. That sweetness there is just about the same as here but more coffee here. Wonderful, really. Ive got one bottle of both of these left. Im gonna have them in series. Mmmm, tasty.

03.12.06 12oz bottle, HW OH. Gorgeous, thick, black, more head than you’d expect for a 15% brew. Aromas are wild, full of licorice, char, band-aid, Twix, prune, cig ash. Up front, I’m enjoying the aromas, but also let down from what were lofty expectations. The first sip washes that all away. Massive on the palate, it’s syrupy, thick, sweet, and utterly decadent. The feel exceeds expectation, invites another sip. It’s thick, sweet, yet lovely with coffee, cocoa, caramel, toffee, cherry, dark chocolate, bitter roast. Outstanding balance, especially for such a massive brew. Finishes soft and silky, not the least bit cloying of overly rich, not too hot, either. Tons of tobacco and char fill a long and pleasant finish. Great beer.

Lots of hype swirling around this beer at the time I drank it. I would certainly say that it lived up to what I was expecting and then some. Extremely dark red color with a milkshake thick head. Huge beer. Chocolate, raisins, toddy, cherries, vanilla, and some sweet alcohol notes (kinda like bourbon on one whiff, then rum on the next). Just plain liquid DECADECE.
