Commercial Description:
Mephistopheles is the crafty shape shifter, the second fallen angel. Amazingly complex, coal black, velvety and liqueurish, this demon has a bouquet of vine-ripened grapes, anise and chocolate covered cherries with flavors of rum-soaked caramelized dark fruits and a double espresso finish. Mephistopheles is the final installment of "The Demons of Ale" series.

Bottle purchased at From the Vine, $7.99. This is the way I want a stout to taste. Malty, chocolate, swee and low hops. Pours a nice chocolate brown with a tan head. I thought the alcohol was very well hidden. Great stout.

Pours a very dark color with a dark coffee brown head. Hints of caramel, chocolate, and alcohol in the aroma. Sweet chocolate/ roasted coffee taste makes this one of the tastier imperial stouts I’ve had.

’06 batch, this is a beautiful beer in both appearance & aroma. Complex nose of sweet summer fruits, chocolate, & coffee. Deep, dark brown with a full mocha colored head that lingers. The flavor is just as complex, supported very well by the aroma, and all the influences present in it. Nice warming effect from the alcohol without much of a burn, with chocolate, cherries, and somewhat of an apricot influence. Finish is just the slightest bit bitter and coffee like. Very nice brew.

A pitch black beer with no head. The aroma is very sweet with primary notes of coffee, but also with light notes of vanilla and alcohol. The flavor is very sweet with a powerful presence of alcohol (no wonder), which burns the mouth slightly, the flavor also contains quite strong chocolate notes and lesser notes of wood, leading to a dry end. A very complex beer.

Pours pure balck with a little bit of dark tan head. I was unimpressed by the aroma. Good, but nothing particularly special. Then the taste. Wow. Thats about all I can say about it. Very complex sweet, fruity, chocolate flavor with just a hint of alcohol that does not give away its 16%. Thick mouthfeel with a nice, long espresso finish. Expensive, but worth every penny. Will definately have this one again.

Looks like I’m going against conventional wisdom with this review but I thought this beer absolutely kicked ass... Thick, dark, and downright evil looking in the pint glass. Very rich and creamy head that just hangs around and hangs around. Smells very dark with chocolate, some dark fruit, a little anise, and tons of roasted malt. Whew.... This is a bad boy here. Chocolate, malts, fruit and a tiny bit of alcohol. May be the creamiest stout I’ve ever had. Ridiculously thick, this one is. Its a bit hot but nothing that deters from the score. I absolutely loved this thing. I get the feeling that there’s no middle of the road with this one, you either love it or want to dump it. I loved it!! Awesome job, Avery!!

2006 bottle, batch 1. Courtesy of Adrian. Huge thanks for this vintage gem. Pours a dangerous looking black. Nose is crazy vinous. Dark rich malt, sugar, alcohol, cherry, raisin. Flavor is just insanely huge with a massive oily mouthfeel. Soy sauce, chocolate covered raisins, cherry pits, toasted grain and alcohol. No real burn which is very suprising. Drinks like its about 10%. Age has been kind to this beer. Which is pretty harsh and boozy when young. Very nice.
