Avery shows that you can make a very powerfull and extreme but still good beer like many US breweries try too but don’t really succeed. They go over the top, Avery doesn’t. Very good beer. Very strong aroma with chocolate and coffee liquor most dominant. Black color, light brown head, good lace. Extremely sweet, moccha liquor, roasted bitter. Thick, viscous and syrupy. You’ll need all evening to finish it but it’s a good evening. Hildigöltur (5109), København, Denmark

Cherries, almonds, chocolate, dried fruits, liquor and toffee in the aroma. The same stuff in the flavour plus loads of other things. Sweet. Extremely complex. Towards the finish it gets quite hoppy and dry. Very full bodied. Very smooth and soft mouthfeel. Very well balanced. The alcohol is smoothly hidden. Excellent. | 4.2 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 9/10 | 4/5 | 8/10 | 4/5 | 17/20 | Jun 28, 2007 12 oz bottle courtesy boutip, Batch #1, bottled January 2006. Completely opaque dark chocolate brown colour with a mostly diminishing fizzy and creamy tan head. Vinous, rich chocolate, caramel, roasty, cappuccino, raisin, and citrus aroma. Vinous, brown sugar, molasses, dark chocolate, raisin, and other dark fruit, and orange flavours with a fruity and alcohol finish. Full bodied, rich and warming mouthfeel. Alcohol is there, but definitely not 15% there. Very good. JPDIPSO (4932), Wauwatosa, Wisconsin, USA
| 4.2 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 8/10 | 5/5 | 8/10 | 4/5 | 17/20 | Apr 11, 2006 Ok, lent is over and now it’s time for a little more serious rating. Appearance is an instant 5. Any beer with a two tone head tan on top, brown on the bottom should also get style point. Body is a dark brown, with a hint of chestnut coming through on the edges. Sweet ripe dark fruit slathered in dark chocolate and molasses. Prunes, dark cherries soaked in dark rum seem to cover a few of the scents. At times it seems a touch to sweet on the nose, but I’m sure age will help correct that. Slightly hot on the palate from the start, but smooth and silky enough to help carry it through. Sweet malty goodness all through the quaff. Anise and dark caramel and chocolate on the front of the tongue. The middle is filled with ripe cherries and a whole fruit salad. Finish is spicy, hot and fitting. Mild licorice and liquor courses through the system. I have a hard time calling this an imperial stout, more an imperial strong ale, but a fine snifter brew. A few shall find the back of my cellar and will be enjoyed several years from now. JohnC (2286), Mission Viejo, California, USA

| 4.2 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 7/10 | 5/5 | 10/10 | 1/5 | 19/20 | Mar 18, 2007 Pitch black heavy pour, with a good sized deep brown head. Aroma is mostly from the high alcohol content. There are some basic malt scents there but they are faint. Definitely full bodied, flavor is strong caramelized malts and much roasted malt goodness. there are many many other flavors, I look at the list of flavors I should expect, and I can say I can’t make out the grapes, cherries or rum. Still very tasty. The Alcohol flavor dominates the finish. The Finish is surprisingly clean for such a heavy stout. Not an easy drink, but at that content, you don’t want to have too many. Very Fine Imp. Stout.

Pitch black with a mid-sized, creamy, light brown head. Excellent retention. The nose is of smokey caramel, black cherries, leather, dark chocolate, vanilla rum and espresso. Molasses-sweet, vineous flavor with notes of sweet port and chocolate liquer. The high ABV is excellently hidden. Full-bodied and syrupy with medium carbonation. Finishes sweet and chocolatey with notes of singed fruit. Very much the DFH WWS clone. I really love both! World class brew! badgerben (3605), Blaine, Minnesota, USA
| 4.2 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 8/10 | 5/5 | 8/10 | 4/5 | 17/20 | Jan 18, 2007 Batch 2, November 2006. Black color with a thick tan head. Strong piney hop aroma with a hefty whack of rum. Bitter wood and massive hop taste. Very piney with some citrus touches. The coffee is there, but not prominent at all. A little plum and syrup finish. Very fine, but a lot like Surly Darkness and 3F Dark Lord, it’s an Imperial Stout that’s almost like a dark IIPA. Tasty, but I’m going to let one sit for a year or two.
