Commercial Description:
Mephistopheles is the crafty shape shifter, the second fallen angel. Amazingly complex, coal black, velvety and liqueurish, this demon has a bouquet of vine-ripened grapes, anise and chocolate covered cherries with flavors of rum-soaked caramelized dark fruits and a double espresso finish. Mephistopheles is the final installment of "The Demons of Ale" series.

Batch 1 (Jan 2006): 15.1% ABV.
Batch 2 (Nov 2006): 16.03% ABV.
Batch 3 (Nov 2007): 16% ABV.
Batch 4 (Nov 2008): 15.92% ABV.

Pours a thick, pitch black. Strong rising head that is a dark reddish brown. Head lasted through the whole time drinking it. Smell was sweet with chocolate, caramel, and roasted malts. Taste was rich and full. Chocolate, malts, and alcohol. Flavor lingered in the mouth, wanting more. Great beer, my new favorite!

A great beer... Quickly has become one of my favorite stouts...pours a bloodish black...nice and thick...The 16.03% alcohol is nicely masked by the mixture of fruits and black coffee...needs to be sipped slowly and over time keeps its consistancey... a nice finsh with just a tad of afterburn

12 oz. bottle from Grape & Gourmet (Batch 4, bottled November 2008). Black pour with a thick tan head. Big dark fruit aroma with a hint of dark chocolate; surprisingly low alcohol aroma. Rich flavor of espresso, bitter chocolate, and a hint of tart fruit (almost tastes like raspberry or cherry). Alcohol is hidden as far as taste is concerned but there is some moderate alcohol warming. This is a world class Imperial Stout.

Batch 2 - Thick, dark, releasing aromas of chocolate, alcohol, and coffee. Very smooth, alcohol is well hidden. Improved as it warmed. Complex.

Pours like black hole with an initial 2 finger head, settles down quickly and flavors are extremely complex and do change around when you swirl the glass: aromas of black, unsweetened coffee infused with dark Belgian cocoa powder, some hints of anise and zinfandel, alcohol is present for sure and it packs a punch. This is an extraordinary sipping brew, and to enjoy with dark or white chocolate, cigar perhaps. The alcohol kicks up as the beer warms, and the flavors do change and the roasted malts appear…coats the tongue with creaminess, like a cross between chocolate milk and some of the best Bordeaux. It really is a crafty shape shifter. Coming from a wine world, this is class altering beer!!! Hints of port, zinfandel, single barrel bourbon. Amazing!! If I want to get drunk within a single tulip glass, I have found my elixir.

My first review. Had the 07 batch in a bottle. Very strong alcohol burn, covered well by coffee and chocolate flavors. Worth the price.

do you know when you can be sure your steppparents like you ? It’s when they bring you a Mephistopheles Stout from Washington DC back to Europe ! - pours a pitch black colour under a little, brown tainted foam; a stupendous, rich and complex aroma invades the nose: dried fruits (mainly raisins), alcohol, anise and wood escort the strong notes of black chocolate; roasted but not too much; thick and enormously tasty, very sweet and full-bodied, strong bitterness; long creamy, toasted chocolatey finish with hints of cherry, licorice and molasses and a huge warming alcohol kick - this stuff is gigantic, excessive, too sweet and definitely lacking of balance but I love it !

A very black beer with a very brown head that is very large. The aroma is huge cherry flavored chocolate. The body is very nice and thick and very complex. Lots of alcohol and red fruit up front with a nice big smooth chocolate finish. The cherries come back into play in the aftertaste. This is very very fucking good.
