Poured a brown/mahogany color with a light brown, bubbly head and good lacing. I liked the initial dry aroma coupled with roasted, nutty, and just a touch of maple and brown sugar notes. The flavor took on some dark chocolate and coffee while staying pleasantly bitter. KAF (441), Coralville, Iowa, USA
| 3.8 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 8/10 | 3/5 | 8/10 | 3/5 | 16/20 | Jan 15, 2009 Nice surprise. Dark brown pour with a dirty colored head with lacing. Aroma is great consisting of some dry dark fruit, hops and some cocoa. The flavor is much the same with the fruit a bit less strong and the hop presence increased. Very well balanced. | 3.9 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 7/10 | 5/5 | 8/10 | 4/5 | 15/20 | Jan 2, 2009 Bottle from Ølbutikken, drunk 1st January 09 to start off the year! Near black with a big creamy head. Lovely rich roasted malt taste with a little burnt hint in the aftertaste. Palate is spot on. The hopping helps to give it a dry finish. Aroma could be stronger but overall, an enjoyable beer. kiefdog (1631), Tampa, Florida, USA
| 3.2 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 6/10 | 4/5 | 6/10 | 4/5 | 12/20 | Dec 28, 2008 12oz bottle from Rollin Oats Grocery (Tampa, FL). Pours a dark brown to black with thick and creamy tan head that settles slowly and provides ample lacing. Aroma is sweet and malty with a noticeable hop presence. Some notes of grapefruit, pine, soy, dark fruit. Flavor is roasted and malty with some subtle sweet notes of caramel and honey along with chocolate and hoppy citrus flavors. Generally medium body with a malty and hoppy finish. A little too hoppy for a porter IMHO. thornecb (1801), Marblehead, Massachusetts, USA
| 3.5 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 6/10 | 3/5 | 7/10 | 4/5 | 15/20 | Dec 23, 2008 Pours mahogany tinged black into a shaker. Mocha head with good retention leaves slight sheets as it recedes to hug rim. Winey dark pit fruit and soy aromas. Roasted syrupy milk chocolate upfront with a dusty mocha finish. | 3.6 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 7/10 | 4/5 | 6/10 | 4/5 | 15/20 | Dec 23, 2008 Pours deep cola brown with a half finger thick tan head, leaving nice lacing behind as it recedes down the glass. Nice nose of milk chocolate and a touch of coffee. The flavor is a bit more bitter coffee and roasted malts. Smooth on the palate and a slight bitter hop finish. gpekar (229), Maryland, USA
| 3.8 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 7/10 | 5/5 | 7/10 | 4/5 | 15/20 | Dec 8, 2008 Poured a dark brown almost black with orange highlights around the glass edges. A good foamy light brown head. There was a nice chocolate aroma. The flavor was a smokey, nutty flavor with hints of chocolate. On the finish there was a bit of a dark chocolate bitterness and a slightly dry finish. There was not much of a hop bite from the dry hopping, but still a very good beer! | 3.7 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 7/10 | 4/5 | 7/10 | 4/5 | 15/20 | Dec 8, 2008 Bottle. This is a nice example of the style that Ive had the pleasure of drinking for what seems like many years now. This porter is on the hoppy side of the spectrum with a good roasted malt and chocolate backbone. With Avery, the lesser the alcohol, the better the brew.
