Pours dark - no light getting thru this glass, baby! Khaki head, which thinned to a blotchy "rash" on the top of the beer. Lacing coats the glass up to the "high tide" line of the head. Smells of wood, hops, burned chocolate, and plum. Tastes of baking (unsweetened) chocolate, caramel, wood, and hops, with the hops giving it a bitter tangy-ness uncommon to most porters. Not a bad porter for a hops lover, but it’s nice to get a maltier, sweeter beer in from time to time. brewski519 (433), Morrisville, North Carolina, USA

Aroma of coffe, roasted malt and smoke. Great blend of hops, roast and coffee from the first sip. Perfectly balanced with the malt, some smokiness and carbonation. This Porter definitely separates itself from the pack with the nice hoppiness. Great Porter. tedovertu (260), Apple Valley, Minnesota, USA

Roasted, hoppy nose with notes of citrus, pine needles, coffee and a touch of soy sauce. Roasted, malty taste with dark chocolate, cocoa powder and liquorice turning into citrussy hops and pine needles, finishing with espresso and a generous coffee bitterness. Slightly above medium body, nicely balanced sweetness. Lovely porter in almost perfect balance. b33r (363), Cleveland, Ohio, USA

An uprising is looming on the horizon, and I fear that those who do not embrace diversity will be slowly and sadly left behind. Embracing diversity stimulates and secures individuality, not the other way around. Avery understands this and is aiming for a world of diversely accepting palates, a sounding for our new beery world order.
He strode proudly into my glass and set-up camp for the long and arduous night ahead. Deep and enveloping, only a glimmer of light is able to peak through. He cuddles under a thick tan blanket tucked snug around his body. As I tilt my glass for the first journey into his dark depths, lace spackles the sides of my glass like guiding stars of light. Burnt sugars, roasted coffee beans, dry dark chocolates, licorice root, dates, soil and wood finish with a dry, brittle burnt finish of decadent proportions. It doesn’t have to be all sweet to make me weak in the knees. A whiff of tobacco leaf and smoke flitters through the background, drawing me in for my first quaff. A touch of effervescence lifts his body and palate just enough to keep my tastebuds from suffocating in a billowing flurry of smoke, tobacco, wood, roasted coffee beans, dark and dry cacao beans that, surprisingly enough, is broken up with a tart tingle smack dab in the middle of all the action. Furthering his tinge of citric acidity are red apple skins. Each breath is sweet, oak smoke, cigar smoke, tobacco leaves and rich top soil. A very earthy, dry, and full bodied porter, I am fully digging his dry personality. As my mouth thirsts for each quaff, the night parts way to allow light back into my life. Unfortunately, that also means my glass is now empty. Thankfully, my New World Porter revolution is never over.
A couple years ago I was only semi-impressed with Avery Brewing. As time passes me by though and my palate continues to further expand its horizons, I am finding a renewed interest and enjoyment in their beers, especially the darker, richer, more complex offerings. Start your own revolution, dive into the night, and bring some New World Porter home with you. gringo332 (246), Richardson, Texas, USA

The flavor brings roasted malt, hints of coffee and chocolate, followed by a solid dose of floral hops. Pretty good.
