| 3.8 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 7/10 | 4/5 | 8/10 | 4/5 | 15/20 | Aug 11, 2007 Deep brown pour, thick tan head with ample splotchy lacing. The aroma is very roasty, quite hoppy and has hints of almonds, burned coffee, very light alcohol, caramel and grapefruit. Simple, straightrforward, yet exciting. the flavor is very bitter, moderately astringent and only mildly sweet. Roasted malt and citric acidity from hops work very well in this decidedly American version of a robust porter. Robust is the key word; this thing has a strong grip on the palate, with biting carbonation, resin, roasted grains that actually feel very grainy and coarsae on the tongue and a medium-full bodied, well-rounded mouthfeel. Smooth too, despite intense hopping. The finish is fruity, caramel and bitterness lingering on and on. Very tasty, a world apart from the stout, even though the ratings aren’t that far apart. | 3.8 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 7/10 | 3/5 | 7/10 | 4/5 | 17/20 | Jul 16, 2007 Bottle. Pours dark brown. Coffee/cocoa dominates the palate. Not overly sweet or syrupy. More hoppy than most porters sets this one apart. My favorite of Avery’s ’lighter’ beers.
