My first Avery, 12 oz brown bottle. Cost was $1.50 at Vintage Estates in Boardman Ohio. Nice roasty porter aroma once I pop the lid. Very dark nearly opaque color of brown or black. The head is not quite dark brown but is definitely not white, more like a darker tan or lighter brown. The taste of this porter boarders on an imperial stout, Baltic or foreign stout taste. Has the back of throat feeling like you just ate something burned on a charcoal grill? Roasted burned flavor continues thru the finish. It tastes like this was poured thru extinguished campfire coals. Carbonation is present but not overwhelming, I’d give the fizziness a medium low rating. The bitterness on the tongue is a little menacing. Each drink and sip allows this bitterness to build inside the mouth, quite piteous! An average example of what a dark beer can be. Finish is more than my girlie taste buds want to handle as far as bitterness goes. Cannot hold a candle to Yuengling Original Black and Tan or East End Pink Clouds Porter. Also, not as good as Bells Porter, Sierra Nevada Porter, Great Divide St. Bridgets Porter (St. Brigids), Michelob Porter or Left Hand Black Jack Porter. On par with Stone Smoked Porter and Yards General Washington Tavern Porter which I rate below average in the porter styles.

Dark brown with a light brown head, some lacings. Aroma heavy malty (chocolate, smoke, licorice), moderate hoppy. Flavor moderate sweet and bitter. Medium/full body, soft carbonated, like velvet. SDalkoholic (1198), Chula Vista, California, USA
| 3.7 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 7/10 | 3/5 | 7/10 | 4/5 | 16/20 | Apr 20, 2007 Gave off a roasty dark malt aroma and sat in the glass dense and dark brown. Some thick patch of foam formed but easily retreated. The flavor is a mild and dry taste of hop with a roasty burnt malt character that really stands its own ground. This is a mighty fine porter. | 3.6 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 8/10 | 4/5 | 7/10 | 3/5 | 14/20 | Apr 19, 2007 Pour was near black with a nice head that was about two inches tall and light brown. Light lacing for about half a glass. The aroma was chocolate powder and nice floral hops. Good aroma. The flavor had a strong smoke taste initially. Underneath that was chocolate that emerged after a few minutes. Mild hops are present as well. Decent dry finish. A solid effort. badnewsbeers (1026), Grand Rapids, Michigan, USA

For me head was rather large and frothy, but the body did seem a little thin at times. good overall. bierkoning (6097), La Tropica, Netherlands
