The pour is very deep chocolate brown, blocks out the lights for the most part. Head looks like melted coffee ice cream. Initial aromas are smokey and woodsy before a more fruity and bathroomy hop scent unfolds. Very nice chocolatey blackberry flavors evolve from a smoked meat beginning same as the aroma. A good rich palate without any of the milky weirdness that affects some porters, with a pleasantly reserved hoppy bitterness replacing it. troopie (908), USA

| 4.2 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 9/10 | 4/5 | 8/10 | 4/5 | 17/20 | Jan 26, 2007 Bottle. Pours a dark brown/black with a large tan head. Lots of remaining foam after the head dies too. Wonderful aroma thanks to that dry hopping. There’s the expected roast and coffee, but there’s also plenty of caramel, and a butterscotch character that kinda melds with the planty hops. It’s like a milder Three Floyds-esque aroma. Flavor shares a lot of similiarites to the aroma: light chocolate, roast, coffee, butterscotch, and a nice earthy planty hop flavor that is absent from most porters. Finishes very dry. Lots of black coffee on the throat, and the hops take on a more burnt woody taste. It all blends very well to me, and the mouthfeel is wonderfully creamy despite being slightly on the thin side. Still this is a great beer. PattyBoy (302), North Liberty, Iowa, USA

1. Bottle
Pour: a very very dark amber with a thick tan head that quickly develops a pockmarked surface. Nose: Strangely enough it has a strong smell of belgian yeast followed by a nice aroma of chocolate malt. Palate: again Belgian yeast is present, this time followed by a sour roasted malt flavor. Finish: nutty with a slight burn in the back of the throat that reminds you of this beer’s considerable abv.
2.Draught
Pour: about the same as in the bottle but the head doesn’t last as long. Nose: This version smells much hoppier and almost makes you doubt that it will taste like anything even resembling a porter. Palate: The dry hopping is a very interesting addition. you get the noraml roasted maltiness you would expect from a porter but with an additional hop bitterness. Sort of like a cup of coffee with hop pellets sitting at the bottom. Finish: Basicaly the same as the bottle but with less alcoholic burn.
Overall: I greatly preferred the druaght at the brewery but both versions are exceptional beers and are worth a try. This seems to be a recurring theme with avery bers though, their bottles are very unlike their kegs but both are normally quite good. benwa420 (47), East Hampton, New York, USA

| 3.4 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 7/10 | 3/5 | 7/10 | 3/5 | 14/20 | Jan 17, 2007 Bottle from Astor Liquors in Laurel, MD. Pours deep brown with beige head. Aroma of caramel and roasted peanuts. Flavor is nutty and toasty, with some accents of mild roast and caramel. Lingering bitter and semi dry finish. I don’t get a lot of dark roast on this. This seems more like a brown porter to me. Still very decent. Cliff (366), Avon Lake, Ohio, USA
| 3.7 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 6/10 | 4/5 | 8/10 | 4/5 | 15/20 | Jan 15, 2007 Bottle, pours a deep brown with a thick head. Rich malty aromas laced with citrus hoppiness. Very nice. Smooth roasted flavor with a clean sweetness balanced by the earthy bitterness. Medium to thick mouthfeel, coats very nicely. Roasted and slightly bitter aftertaste. A very nice porter and the dry hop is a good addition.
