Commercial Description:
A traditional black porter, with a surprise twist - it's dry-hopped!! We've expanded the porter category a bit, adding a delightful, dry hop aroma to blend with the sweet caramel and chocolate characteristics of a Robust Porter.

Pours medium to dark ruby tinted brown with a 3 finger chunky, tan head that has great retention and leaves nice lacing. Aroma is citrus, pine, caramel, chocolate, a little coffee, toffee, roast and a little vanilla. Flavor is roast, chocolate, pine, toast, dark caramel, a little citrus, some spice, a hint of char, dark coffee and grass. Finish is very hoppy with citrus, bitter pine and a little grass, along with some coffee and mince meat. Palate is medium to thin, somewhat oily and slightly over carbonated with an off dry finish. Not bad, really if you have ever wondered what it would taste like if you mixed a Porter and an IPA together to a, say... 3/2 ratio... well here it is. Doesn’t necessarily fit together all that well but it is pretty interesting.

What a beautiful, billowing, tan head of foam! Wonderful retention. The initial aroma smack me in the head with hops. Dry hopped IPA like hops. This is quickly followed by chocolate. Hops hit taste buds up front and are backed up by more traditional dark, toasty, robust porter flavors but the finish is hop. Quite a fun and tasty porter much along the lines of Sierra Nevada Porter.

Bottle. Almost black thin body, with a small brown head. Aroma is chocolate, hops, and roasted malts. Flavor is coffee hops, roasted malts. It has a nice bitter aftertaste. Smooth.

Pours a deep brown with a nice tan head. Taste of roasted malts and hops. It was surprisingly hoppy for a porter, however a good beer. 12 oz. bottle as part of a mix and match sixer.

Bottle from TX. The appearance and aroma were traditional porter. The big surprise cam in the flavour with the strong hop presence. Not enough to be distracting or overly bitter, but enough to make it interesting. Nice twist.

On tap at Buckeye Beer Engine. Darkest brown/black pour with a medium beige head. Roasty and hoppy aroma with a touch of chocolate malt. Flavor is a bit too hoppy for a porter. Trying to be objective here and not rate to style because I would be more impressed if it were called a black IPA.

Bottle, pours black. Strongest aroma is hops followed by coffee and toffee notes. Very nice, bitter and very dry hop taste that is complimented by dark chocolate and roasted malt notes. The hops are abundant and tasty in this one and are a wonderful compliment. Very nice.

12 oz. bottle. For some reason, Illinois sees more of Avery’s special bombers than regular brews. But here come a few. Opaque black cola pour. Dark roast malt and a touch of citrus hop smell even from 2 feet away. Taste just has a bit of sweetness. A spiciness that I think comes more from hops than rye, although some wheat malt isn’t out of the question. Like any bottled porter, there’s a bit too much carbonation for a beer that would taste great with a nitro or cask pour. Still, this is a fine little brew; nice to see that Avery’s table beers are the equal of their desert beers.
