Fruit and malt aroma. Amber coloured strong in alcohol and hoppy with a little roast flavour in a crisp and bitter warming chocolate malt finish. dimenhetfield (165), , Florida, USA Nov 14, 2009 Nice pour, brownish and lightly hazy. Has a nice nutty, hazelnut aroma and flavor. Smooth and warming to the soul. yemenmocha (354), Glendale, Arizona, USA Nov 12, 2009 Pours very dark brown with slight haze. Cannot see through when held to light. Thin light brown head.
Nose has a very pleasant cocoa malt profile. Very appetizing nose.
Palate is a nice blend of rich roasted malt, espresso bitterness/sharpness, alcohol warmth, pine, and a medium long finish.
Above average for a winter ale. bvc (242), Kenmore, Washington, USA Nov 12, 2009 Draft at Brouwer’s. Pours a clear dark amber brown with a decent creamy off white head. Nose is big on sweet malt with raisin, plum, brown sugar, some grassy hops as well. Flavor was pretty much to be expected, sweet sticky maltiness with some nut and light crispness on the end. Solid winter brew. dkachur (2346), Charlottesville, Virginia, USA Nov 10, 2009 12 ounce bottle from Beer Run in Charlottesville, VA. Pours a clear reddish brown color with an expansive, creamy, foamy head. Good head retention and lacing. Aroma of caramel and toffee.
Taste is slightly roasty and nutty malt notes with caramel, toffee and spicy hops. Texture is creamy, smooth and slightly cheesy. Medium-full bodied. neepsntatties (320), Portland, Oregon, USA Nov 7, 2009 12 oz. bottle. Colour... medium brown witha thick head. Nose... quite malty and slightly roasty. Palate... mildly sweet, malty, nutty, toffee-like, lightly spicy and a long finish. Currently my favourite winter ale (as far as a 12 oz. format). Doesn’t seem at all like an 8% ale. This could sneak up on me, if I’m not careful! grandet (477), Scranton, Pennsylvania, USA Nov 6, 2009 Bottle from jessup plaza. nice dark amber color with a small off white head that didnt last long. aroma is very sweet with some alcohol, and dark fruit. Taste is very sweet with notes of caramel, oak, alcohol. Light hop finish which lingers on the tongue for awhile. This is nice. Elwood (677), Leesburg, Virginia, USA Nov 6, 2009 Serving: 12 oz. bottle.
Appearance: Murky amber with a creamy, light tan head. Good head retention.
Aroma: A good bit of boozy fruit with full malt notes, caramel, and a touch of nuts.
Flavor: Dark caramel, boozy dark fruit, a very light coffee note, and a touch of nuts. I have to agree, this one is pretty tasty and omission of the spices isn’t missed.
Palate: Medium carbonation with a medium-rich mouthfeel and a medium finish.
Overall: Definitely one of the better strong ales I’ve had. The alcohol is present, but does a nice job of playing with others. Great flavor, mouthfeel and appearance.
