Commercial Description:
Our winter strong ale has a gorgeous mahogany hue, a hint of hazelnuts, and a finish reminiscent of mocha and toffee. No spices, just a perfect blend of five specialty malts. Cellarable for 2 years.

Bottle at 52 degrees. Mild citrus hop aroma, reddish brown color that resembles cherry wood. Taste is roasty with alcohol, and a short burst of hop bitterness. I’m looking forward to cellaring a couple and opening them in 8 and 14 months from now. Updated rating on 8/6/09 (originally rated on 1/7/09): Pour still produces a decent head. More malt in the nose than I recall. Slightly sweeet aroma. Flavor has improved. Great balance of toffee malt and pleasant hop bitterness. Mouthfeel seems to have improved as well. Overall I bumped this up from a 13 to a 15. It’s very good now. I wish I could have resisted drinking the others. Even still, it’s hard to imagine that too much more age will improve this, but it’s possible.

This to me wins for the night. Good color of reddish brown. thinnish head that laces really well. Smells strongly of chocolate, caramel, toffee and alcohol with a bit of dark fruit in there. good full flavor of toffee, burnt malt, figs, and caramel. Has a somewhat hidden alcohol presence, but not real hidden. Palate is somewhat smooth and a bit syrupy. Finishes with a sort of Barley wine burn. A little. Good good.

Pours a dark copper color. Aroma is not overpowering of toffee and dull malts. Taste is amazing. Very smooth and tastes better then the original apperance and aroma. Good brew, not great.

Poured the beer from the bottle into a pint glass for drinking. It had a pleasnt aroma with a strong floral hop presence, but also some citrus and pine hops. A modest caramel malt scent and a little bit of toffee and molasses. It was a dark, but clear copper-brown color with a big, foamy, off-white head that was quite thick with good retention and slight cling. It had a brief sweet fruity taste, that quickly became bitter and somewhat sour in the mouth, becoming more bitter and alcoholic as the beer went. The beer was pretty wet with some good fizz and a medium-density body. The present of alcohol was noticeable throughout and it had a dry finish that was somewhat rough. A pretty good beer with some good characteristics and substance.

Poured with a nice large head and good lace. Brownish amber color. I claim an aroma sensory handicap due to sinus problems. With that, I can’t smell a lot going on with this beer. Taste is way bigger though. Yum! Very malty, dark fruits, earth, leather, and a bit of toffee. Some booziness. Not really a session beer. Good for a cold snowy night. Pass the bottle.

’08 vintage 12oz bottle from bevmo, encinitas. Clear darker red/mahagony with medium, long lasting, chunky, tan head. Sweet dark red fruit with slight carmelization and yeastiness. Flavor is nutty, yeast, cranberry, toasted malt, orange citrus, nice subtle hop bitterness, i also want to say it has a slight coffiness but it could just be the hop presence. Medium, well carbonated body. Very enjoyable and the alc is not even noticable.

Dark red-brown with a tan head. Aroma is delicate and fruity. I smell apples and oranges, and just a bit of yeast. Flavor is malt, yeast, grapefruit, pine. Very nice hop flavor in the finish. I almost want this to have a bigger flavor, but this is fine the way it is. A nice mild, pleasant beer. Very smooth finish. Very good.

12oz. Bottle: Aroma of hops, biscuit, toasted malts, slight alcohol, light citrus, light grapefruit, slight yeast, slight pine, and some flowers. Poured deep orange/brown/deep amber in color with a large, dense, rocky, creamy, tan head that lasted throughout. Clear. Slightly sparkling. Excellent lacing. Flavor is lightly sweet and lightly bitter. Tastes of malts, toasting, hops, slight citrus, light chocolate, bread, slight resin, nuts, wood, and some toffee. Medium body. Lightly tingly, dry texture. Average carbonation. Semi-sweet, malty, woody finish is dry. 8%ABV is very well hidden.
