Pours a deep amber with great, rocky beige head that left lacing all over the glass. Sweet aroma of malt, fruit, with some alcohol spice. Flavor is nice, sweet, some spice, very slight baking chocolate, caramel, nutty, alcohol spice. Mouthfeel is medium body with medium-high carbonation. Over all, tasty warming ale. reakt (937), Greater London, England

Sweet malts and caramel, hints of nuts, chocolate and fruits with a little hop character shining through. Not bad but not outstanding either, I’m starting to get the hump with Avery now. | 3.1 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 6/10 | 4/5 | 6/10 | 3/5 | 12/20 | Sep 10, 2008 This is a deep rich red colored ale, very little head. The aroma is a wonderful sweet malty scent with a hint of fresh hops, if it taste as good as it smells it will be a very good beer. As for the taste, it’s fresh with rich maltiness that finishes with a mild hop bitterness. This is a good Winter brew, it’s rich flavor and mild bitterness is perfectly matched for a cold winter day. timsilvia32 (447), from Michigan now in Charlotte, North Carolina, USA
| 3.8 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 7/10 | 4/5 | 8/10 | 3/5 | 16/20 | Sep 7, 2008 Bottle of the 2006. Hazy dark brown pour, a very little tan head. Nice malty aroma. Some roast and sweet malts, caramel, some roast or smoked nut. A little earthy/oily. Kind of a lingering sweet finish, not much hop prescence to speak of. Reminded me a bit more of a scotch ale than an English strong ale. I had a Three Floyds Robert the Bruce scotch ale before this one and I thought this was slightly better. Since I prefer the heavier, less spiced winter ale, I thought this was excellent. Homer321 (127), Rockledge, Florida, USA
| 1.3 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 2/10 | 3/5 | 3/10 | 2/5 | 3/20 | Sep 7, 2008 roasty, burnt toast, coffee, non-hop bitterness kills this beer. very astringent. head dissipates quickly leaving nice lacing. With no spices, buttery mouthfeel, this beer was not a fun experience. Based on the reviews, maybe my bottle was bad, but I won’t rush out to get another one any time soon. thomat (666), Göteborg, Sweden
