Commercial Description:
Our winter strong ale has a gorgeous mahogany hue, a hint of hazelnuts, and a finish reminiscent of mocha and toffee. No spices, just a perfect blend of five specialty malts. Cellarable for 2 years.

From the bottle. Pours a beautiful rich ruby brown with a lovely tan head. Aromas of currants and raisins. Nice malty sweetness in the flavor profile with chocolatey, toffee and nutty characteristics. Nice dry finish with a bit of warming alcohol, great example.

Bottle. Pours Mahogany brown. Aroma is malt, chocolate malt. toffee, and dark fruit. Finish is a bit to bitter and dry for my taste.

Nice dark reddish color. Aroma if fruity and nutty. Mostly sweet malt. Dark fruits, toffee, nuts make up the flavor profile. Perhaps some peppery hops in the finish with a good amount of noticeable alcohol for the percentage. Decent stuff.

They claim no spices but that is hard to believe. Peppery and a not sweet but a candy liccorice aspect that I can’t fathom. Woody yet they claim no barrel aging. Very bitter I just wish it had a hint of fruit.

12-ounce bottle. Pours a dark, near-opaque orange-brown with a 3/8-inch head. Nutty, creamy, malty. Pleasant. I was expecting a little more alcohol taste. This is a good and satisfying beer, but there’s something slightly amiss here. I can’t quite put my finger on it. Unbalanced, I guess you could say. The different flavors don’t synergize like they would from a "great" beer. It seems that Avery gets so close to that world-class level without actually breaking through to it. They made very good beers, not "great" beers, in my humble opinion. As is the case here.

Flaske. Mørk ravfarvet øl. Diskret duft af humle og en del malt. Ikke sød men maltdomineret med en skarp eftersmag af humle. Bitter metalisk. Udmærket velkomponeret bryg.

12 oz. bottle. Pours a clear dark amber with a thin off-white head that disappeared after the first two sips and left very little lace. Light malty aroma with not much else detected. The flavor is sweet malt up front, but is also fairly timid. A moderate alcohol burn kicks in towards the finish. Peppery at the swallow, which lingers for a bit afterwards. Not a bad beer, just not something I’d go back to.

I really enjoyed this beer, and it used to be something that I did not really enjoy, just to show how your palate can change over the years. I like the nuttiness that melts into the malt profile, this is the kind of Christmas ale that I like to drink, this is what I think of, not something overly spiced, this is just right for the winter.
