| 3.9 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 7/10 | 4/5 | 8/10 | 4/5 | 16/20 | Mar 11, 2008 Handsomely dark pour with slight beige head. No winter spices, but something still wintery about it. I feel like there’s still a faint hint of coriander, but maybe it’s just phantom because I expect it to be there. This is a favorite winter brew for me. Toasty, malty, sweet, slightly smoky aroma... almost porter-like on the nose. Nice and malty taste with caramel and toffee notes, with still enough hops to stay balanced. Gets better as it warms up slightly. Yum. robertjm (418), El Cerrito, California, USA
| 3.8 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 8/10 | 4/5 | 8/10 | 4/5 | 14/20 | Mar 9, 2008 Pours tall head, which collapses normally. Not too fast. Not too slow. Seems very carbonated. Dark brown, with hints of dark cherry color when held up to a light source. Wonderful aroma. Again, reminds me of cherries though perhaps that is what they’re calling the hint of hazelnuts. More than a hint to me. VERY nice flavor. Not overly hoppy and on the malty side for sure. Definately taste the hazelnut flavor they talk about. Not cloyingly sweet. Lightly roasted malts hang around on the pallate. Hides the 8% alc. well in its body, though as the beer warms up it does come out a little more pronounced. Overall, I’d definately put this on the buy again list. Wish I’d had this earlier in the season so I could’ve known to buy a whole six-pack! unclemike (833), Ft. Riley, Kansas, USA
| 3.8 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 7/10 | 3/5 | 7/10 | 4/5 | 17/20 | Feb 29, 2008 Bottle. Clear dark copper/brown. Thick tan head, leaving striped lacing. Sweet and rich malty aroma, somewhere between caramel and molasses. Sweet but not cloying dark malt flavors, slightly roasty/toasty coffee/chocolate with a bit of a plummy dried fruit tang in the background. Some darkly toasted nut bitteness in the finish. Alcohol clandestine. Nice straightforward X-mas ale which is not unnecessarily gussied up with the traditional spices.

| 3.5 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 5/10 | 4/5 | 7/10 | 4/5 | 15/20 | Feb 28, 2008 pleasant dark red coloring with a little lacing on the glass. Nutty, malty and spicy taste with a rounded, almost oily mouth feel. A nice winter beer. Would go good with beef tips or a nutty cheese, or maybe nuts. Glouglouburp (2887), Montreal, Quebec, Canada
| 2.7 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 5/10 | 4/5 | 5/10 | 3/5 | 10/20 | Feb 27, 2008 In short: A good caramel/toffee malt backbone but overly spicy. Quickly gets sickening.
How: Bottle, 3+ months old. From dmac621, thanks Dave.
The look: Dark ruby body with a medium beige head leaving very good lacing
In long: Rich malted body with caramel and toffee. But the spices man, they just went overboard with the spices. Cinnamon, nutmeg, basil and whole bunch more. Just too much of it. It took over everything. Felt as if my bottle was filled with the end of a keg with all the spices deposit. Bad bottle? I don’t know but one thing for sure this bottle didn’t suit me at all. Not enough shoulder room and my feet were all squeezed. hellbilly (1566), scottsdale über alles, Arizona, USA
| 3.8 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 7/10 | 4/5 | 8/10 | 3/5 | 16/20 | Feb 25, 2008 pours a rich reddish brown (some say mahogany) with a tan head that leaves lots of lacing. aroma is a combination of light fruity sweetness, caramel, grain, wood, spice and a mild sourness. the flavor is really malty along with toffee, cinnamon/spice, chocolate, raisins and some herbal woodiness. lightly bitter yeasty finish as alcohol peeks it’s head in. medium body that is not sticky and develops creaminess when it’s sloshed around... nuplastikk (1255), Madison, Wisconsin, USA
| 3.8 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 7/10 | 4/5 | 7/10 | 4/5 | 16/20 | Feb 21, 2008 12oz bottle. Very deep brown-black color, with a deep amber shade when held to light. This one is full bodied and complex. Brown sugar and alcohol aroma. Sweet and a little hoppy like a Barleywine, but more drinkable. Deep and malty like a Dopplebock, but toffee flavors and ale yeast characteristics come through making it certainly not classifiable as such. All in all a great original winter beer. rustychiles (1069), Mesa, Arizona, USA
| 3.9 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 7/10 | 3/5 | 8/10 | 4/5 | 17/20 | Feb 21, 2008 Pours a medium brown with a nice bubbly head. Smells like malt, hops and some caramel. Flavor of hops, citrus, chocolate, coffee, malt. My taste buds are confused, but I like it.
